There's a pretty active forum on
www.AV123.com. Most such forums have a kind of groupthink that tends to favor the products sold by that site, as they're all invested in it. But if you read between the lines, you can get an idea what people think of each kind of gear.
For example, with the SP3, a good number of people are very pleased with it out of the box. A certain number of others find that it's not as good as they hoped, and certainly not as good as a $5,000 tube amp despite what 6moons' review makes it seem like, and they put it up for sale on that forum or on Audiogon.
But then you find that there's another group that's between those two, that have found some easy tube rolling, as well as a couple simple mods (capacitor changes that void the warranty), that make the SP3 something very nice to own and listen to even for more advanced audiophiles.
So I would recommend some further research on their forum and also that you Google the name of their ss amp to see if anyone elsewhere has posted owner reviews. Check on AudioAsylum and AudioGon's discussion forums as well. If it doesn't sound special, and you've thought you might enjoy tubes, this deal might be the perfect way to check it out.
I bought the Reference One/SP3 combo yesterday. I paid $200 extra for piano black finish on the speakers due to WAF. I was pretty skeptical about the SP3 amp because of the over-the-top 6moons review. But I've never had a tube amp before, and after reading a bunch of stuff on the AV123 forums, I think I'll be really happy with the combo out of the box. Furthermore, by changing two tubes for around $40-60, I can take the thing up another level. By swapping capacitors I can take it to yet another level. I'm looking forward to this part, too.
I'll miss having a tuner, as I don't have a separate tuner, only the one in my receiver. And I probably won't be able to listen to the SP3 amp very much until the second half of October due to the heat it generates, as most tube amps do; I'll be using my JVC F10 receiver in the meantime. But nothing's perfect.
I've been copying the more informative posts about stands and tube rolling and mods from their forums into a word processing document. If anyone wants a copy of my file in either WordPerfect or Word format, just PM me with your e-mail address and I'll send you what I've got by the middle of next week.
