JVC Receiver - which one - help!
« on: 19 Jul 2005, 03:55 am »
Hello all,
New to the forum and have really enjoyed picking up great posts and info so far.

I am in need of a new receiver for my modest HT system and really liked what I have heard from people regarding the value/performance muscle of the JVC receivers (most of what I have read has been about the JVC RXF10S).

Well I went to buy from Amazon (nice sale) and was immediately paralyzed with indecision.  The RXF10S is $169 and what appears to the be the comparable 2005 model, the RX-D201S is $167.
Just in case here is the link http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0007XH73S/qid=1121744881/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8__i1_xgl23/002-1368915-9028827?v=glance&s=electronics&n=1065836

From what I can gather the RXD201S has 7 channels and a Texas Instruments DSP (the RXF10 has a motorola and 6 channels).
The RXD also has a USB port for PC to receiver streaming audio.

Any help, opinions etc would be huge.

I'm sure you will get other positive responses on the RX-F10 but it is a fixture in my system and in DVD Multi mode it is one of the most musical receivers I have ever owned!!  Can't say enough about it.  I have heard some bad things about the 201 as far as heating up.  I have never had my F10 get more than lukewarm and I have it on all day long.

Everyone has different needs and preferences but even without hearing the 201 I would go with the RX-F10 between the two.  All of the heat issues don't sound good to me.  Enjoy whatever choice you make!! :D

I forgot to say welcome to the forum and look forward to your participation!!

Many thanks for the reply.  I agree that potential heat issues are not at all desirable  :o .

Anyone own the newer model who can comment?

I own the 201 and have had zero heat issues. It gets warm, but nothing beyond warm, meaning I can feel warmth by laying my hand on the box, but I can also keep my hand there as long as I like without discomfort.

More importantly how does it sound with music in particular? What speakers are you using?

Thanks

Sorry I went camping...

All I am using it for now is 2-channel music, and that's what I bought it for. I'm going to move it out of the study into the family room and run the DVD player through it this week when the new speakers arrive.

It sounds very detailed in comparison to my older cheapo 100wpc s/s amp. Much more clarity and detail, and less aggression in the bass.

Right now it's feeding a pair of 4-ohm Alesis Monitor Two midfield monitors. I'd classify these speakers as "clinical" with the potential for really slamming bass when driven. Tomorrow I should be picking up a pair of Meadowlark Kestrel 2's, assuming they've arrived at work.

The amp is happy driving the 4-ohm speakers. It seems to get warmest when left idle for long periods of time (go figure).

DWC,

Thanks for the response!  I ended up going with the F10.  The $169 special on Amazon was just too good to pass up, especially with all the in depth info on this board.  It has since gone back to its around $220 price tag.

Gotta say I am happy with it. Its still in break in but the sound is clean, and I get nice "true" textures and tones on the various instruments I have tried to isolate, but curiously not all the time (might have something to do with volume or break in).  For $169 - I gotta say I feel like I got a bargain.

But speaking of heat, this little unit gets pretty darn hot on the left side.

BTW - those speakers sound great.  That will be my next upgrade.  Glad to hear I don't have to shy away from 4 ohms.

Thanks again to all.
