Scoop - 626r's Arrive, Miklorsmith in!
« on: 13 Jul 2005, 02:53 pm »
I'm in the club.  Sorry, guys.

They arrived only last night, but a few first impressions:

The present electronics are pretty weak, but the speakers still sound great.  They seem very evenhanded and coherent.  Sparkle at the top is crisp but not crunchy and feels like it goes above my hearing (which I'm sure most do, but some don't sound like it).

Bass is far better than expected in my bigger room.  I'm betting that will suffer with a 6-watter, but I haven't tried it yet.  It might be a while, since there's no preamp in this system.  I could try the stock Clari-T but it really needs a pre in front of it.  I've got an Audiozone Amp-1 integrated coming at 45 watts that should be splendid.

Mids are good but don't sound anything like the big rig.  And, it shouldn't.  The electronics there are Modwright tubed CDP and pre, with far superior cabling and a much better amp.  Compared to the 15-year-old Technics CDP and Audiolab integrated amp, I'd be shocked if it was close.

That's OK.  It's going to be fun hopping things up to see where they go.

Welcome to the 626R Club.

It is truly an amazing speaker and after you get to know it better, you will be even more amazed.

You didn't mention the speakers in the "Big Rig", but if you add a sub or two to the 626R, it might end up moving to that spot.

Enjoy.

Crunchy?

I've heard a lot of unusual descriptors applied to audio reproduction, including crisp, but not "crunchy"... are you sure you weren't baking at the time, or eating CoCo Puffs cereal, maybe? :D

Glad to hear that you are enjoying your new speakers - have fun tweaking the rest of your system to match!

The main rig speakers are Zu Druids.  They don't go any lower than the 626's.  The 626's I'm guessing might even hit a little harder.

I love this hobby.

Welcome to the club.  I have an original sub, which never gets any press.  It does a good job and is powered by an old Carver receiver.  The 626r's and LRC are still powered by Harmon Kardan 520.  It does not do them justice but beggers can't be choosers.  I am waiting for more dust to settle on better amplification.
The AKSA 100 N+ sounded awesome.  At Big B's I believe he used the Son of Ampzilla to show the pair off to me.  That is what sold me!
