super tweeters - anyone try 'em?
« on: 9 Jul 2005, 05:39 pm »
hi all,

recent info/reviews i have read about supertweeters had me intrigued - murata, townshend & tannoy are amongst a few that are designed to work from anywhere from 15khz-20khz, up to 50khz-100khz.  yust slap 'em on top of yer conwentional speakers & let 'em rip.  supposedly they make *all* frequency bands sound better, not really sure how or why.

so, wanting to check this out, but not willing to spend the $1k+ on these, i scouted for alternatives, & found a (relatively) dirt cheap pair of pioneer pt-r07a ribbons on ebay.  these things are rated from 5khz-120khz, ~97db efficient.  they retailed for something like ~$750 ea., before being replaced by the pt-r09's, which were ~$850 each.  getting the pair for <$120 shipped seemed like a good deal to me!  :)

anyway, i was looking for any feedback about supertweeters, whilst i await their arrival.

thanks,

doug s.

I tried a set up like that many years ago. THe speakers I had at the time were KLH 23's Real deep and heavy sound. The add on tweeters I bought had 3 in each enclosure and went right on top of the KLH's. Just plug them into the speaker terminals. They helped brighten up the overall sound somewhat. Definitely was not a killer add on but they did work okay. I can't even remember what brand they were. Unusual for me. I've got a very good memory.

                                Cheers

hi charlie,

tho i don't know the name of those tweets, i also remember them.  they were also a popular add-on to bose 901's - even had a similar cabinetry.  but, afaik, they were more like traditional tweeters - they went from ~10khz to 20khz.  what i am talking about is using tweets that do not start until 15khz or higher.

regards,
