JVC Digital Receiver Warning!

I've gone through 3 of these in the last month. These are the 1st pieces of electronics I've had problems with ever.

ES1SL fried power supply
RX-D202B fried power supply
RX-D202B refused to accept analog signal

All I can say is make sure you buy one a retailer with a good return policy, or a warranty.

JVC gear is temperamental. I have a DVD player from JVC that refuses to read DVDs or even CDR, eventhough it specificies it does.

Furthermore, I imported a mini system from the Far East, also a JVC and on transit, the CD drive went bust. After a 150 fixing, the tech told me it was a shoddy rubber band issue.

Okay, let us not get into questioning audio quality of some Japanese manufacturers or companies.

The worst one for me is SONY
and another one is obviously JVC.

I am sure we can all come up with examples of bad products. Sony certainly has gone downhill from their former quality control. It seems they now use the public to beta test their products. The digital ES line of receivers (with the secret recall) and the Grand Wega LCD TVs with their bad bulbs are some recent examples. But JVC certainly seems to be able to one up Sony. I am on my third ES1SL, the first two being defective. I am not even going to consider the new 202B after what I have been reading about them (I really do not need another hot plate for cooking). Too bad, as these companies seem to be able to come to market with interesting products, if they only worked.

I am sorry to hear that people are having problems with their JVC kit. When it does work, it is great stuff.

I had an ES-1 for a while, one that survived at least 3 shipping trips too, as it was used, and I lent it to JLM for a couple of weeks.

Then I bought one of these - http://www.jvc.ca/en/consumer/archived-product-detail.asp?model=FS-X1

And this week, I found one of these on eBay for $190... - http://www.jvc.com/presentations/exa1/

I use those little mini systems with my open baffle Visaton b200's, and the results are staggering.

Hopefully they continue to function...

I sure hope nothing goes wrong with either of my JVC F10s. I love the way they sound, and I have big plans for both of them.

I had a F10S and never had a problem. Should've kept it. I'm only going to be using my next receiver for HT playback so it'll be a panny for me.

Speakers come and go but my F10 ain't goin' nowhere. Should it ever happen to fail I'll just have to find another F10. I figure it must have over 2000 hours on it and it has never sounded better!

I'm going to get a ES1SL, F10 or 201 for my den/HT room (preferably an ES1SL) and I hope it doesn't die in transit from the U.S. to Hong Kong or anytime soon after. I could get a brand new ES1SL here in HK... for almost $500!!

My preference is the ES1SL since it seems to have the most "tube-like" sound (but with power and dynamics). My speakers are an easy load Acoustic Reality Avinci 1 2-way bookshelfs (85 db/watt sensitivity but maybe 6 ohms impedance).

Hi Mark,

How do you like that little FS-X1? Does it compare well with the ES1-SL?

I have an ES1 and once it burned in it was really nice to listen to. I could see how some could say it's a little colored, but it leans towards a warm, intimate, communicative sound. Very nice! Sounds great with a burned in Scott Nixon DacKit on SLA batteries.

I had one that was working well and sounding really good. Then it started buzzing. I noticed that I could stop the buzzing if I put my hand on the cover and pressed down a bit, so it was a mechanical problem.

When I looked inside I found that one corner of one of the pressed metal "cages' (I'm sure these house and protect the output devices) has popped up and is pressing up against the cover.

A screw secures this corner, but I've been unable to loosen it, readjust the metal, and then tighten it again because the clearance between "cages" is something like 1.5cm.

If anyone can recommend a right-angle Phillips head screw wrench that can fit in a 1.5cm space, I could fix the buzz and I would be very grateful!

Otherwise, I've been very happy with how the ES1 sounds.

When I had the ES-1, I did not have the FS, so it is hard to compare them from memory - but it is the same tech employed, so I do believe there is a family resemblance to the sound.

I find the little FS to be a great little unit. It is ridiculous to see it with my huge open baffle speakers, but close your eyes, and it does the trick.

I am hoping that the EX A1 will offer some improvement - in reading about the attention to detail employed in voice it (separate power supply, caps chosen for sound, copper screws etc) it should bear out that way.

If it does, I will likely use it AS my system... with the Visatons, and some subs. The wooden speakers I will use in another room, likely with the FS.

I have two F10's and they have never so much as burped. They have performed flawlessly for months. LOTS of use and both driving 4 ohm Maggies.

I really should buy one more as a backup. I wonder if they are still available. Bought my last one on Amazon for $189. A steal.
