Stock Teac AL700P - Can it drive Magnepan MMG's?
« on: 5 Jul 2005, 05:40 am »
Hi guys, i was set on getting a set of Magnepan MMGW's, and at 300, it's a damn good price.  I had a subwoofer lying around at the time, and thought it'd be a good match.  But just recently, my moronic brother sold my Athena P3 subwoofer to some guy for some stupid low amount.  So the question is.  What should i do?

A) get MMGw's and another subwoofer
or
B) Get MMG's and forego the subwoofer.

Can the STOCK teac drive either of them to satisfactory volumes?  This is for my bedroom which is sized 8 feet wide, 12 feet long and 10 feet high.  I've got some thinking to do because the MMGw's looked attractive initially, but with the added cost of a subwoofer, it'd be more expensive than the MMG's.  The MMG's could do without a Sub, but having a quasi ribbon would be a damn nice thing.  Thoughs and inputs my audio-brethern.

Thanks for thoughts, it's much appreciated.

I hope I'm not the only one to reply to your posts, I know a couple others have maggies. I got the SPL meter out last night and got about 80-85 dB at 10 feet away in a 12x18 room with the teac and MG12's.
The W's need a sub, the MMG's might be ok in a small room like yours, but a sub wouldn't hurt. Just remember MMG's like to be about 2 feet from the front wall. I think the MMG's are much better main speakers than the W's, well worth the extra money if you can position them properly.
