I hate to rank movies, but a few sci-fi movies i would highly recommend are:

-the original Solaris and Stalker, both directed by andrei tarkovsky (one of my favourite directors)
-Metropolis
-2001
-Equilibrium...sort of a matrix meets fahrenheit 451 and brave new world dystopic actiony sci-fi movie, but better than the matrix.
I would probably include some anime here too, but i'm not sure if everyone would agree that they belong in sci-fi.

The Road Warrior
A Clockwork Orange
The Terminator/T2

Is the Road Warrior considered to be science fiction?  If so, that definitely goes on my list.

Am surprised to see some list the Fifth Element...yes, the DVD is an excellent film/video transfer and the soundtrack sounds awesome on a great HT system, but IMHO it was a prime example of giving a frenchman (director) too much money and creative freedom to make a science fiction film... :o

According to allmovie.com it is sci-fi:

You are probably right that the Fifth Element is a step below the other movies I listed.

Most have listed the great ones already, but I'm very glad to see the "second tier" ones show up.  Dark City and Starman are amazing films.  And George, I'm very glad to see another AC guy list Kubrick's other sci-fi masterpiece, A Clockwork Orange, on the top 5 list.  Add that to 2001, Close Encounters, Terminator 2 and Empire Strikes Back for me.

And man do I wish Blade Runner was remastered for DVD!!

Logan's Run!?!?!     :)

For the most part, I've found that movies (particularly sci-fi) with an overly-descriptive text introduction just don't do it for me...movies that have complex environments/situations that can stand on their own without the introductory reading are a good sign that the filmmaker knows what he's doing.  Star Wars Episode 4 & 5 were exceptions, but IMHO they work great even without reading the intro-scroll..
