Subwoofer cabinet damping

Danny,

While I am waiting delivery of my subwoofer and PR  I have question about cabinet damping. Is Blackhole #5 effective or appropriate for use to damp the vibrations of a subwoofer cabinet walls?

It is vary effective. Cabinet resonances are what can make or break a good sub-woofer. I put it in any sub I build. Plus, lots of bracing.

Danny,

Thanks for the advice. I have used Blackhole before on small speaker cabinets, but I don't recall seeing anybody ever using it  or recommending it's use for subwoofer cabinets.  Seemed like a good idea to me, that is what prompted my question.

Danny,

Can the subwoofer and the PR be mounted  as is or should I put  some type of gasket between them and the cabinet?

The rubber gasket on the frame works fine and seals well.

Danny,

I have my subwoofer cabinets  lined with 2.5" eggcrate foam from Parts Express. Do you recommend any addition fill ?

It must be pretty good, VMPS is now offering it as an option.  It must be even better than the "Soundcoat" paint used in their speakers until know

I could be wrong but Danny has a new material coming unlike the BH5
This has a thicker back barrier than BH5.
This new product will have a thicker backer that WILL help to reduce the cabinet vibration.

If you are on a budget and can not afford the BH5.
Use a very good peel and stick floor tile you can get from HD,Low's ect..40cents each
Check a few, pull a little corner of the paper back while you are in the store and check the PSA on the back. How sticky they are!
And yes eventhe same brand one tile to the next may be different.
That said line your cabinet walls with the tiles.
But pre wipe the walls with clean cloth that is damp to remove any dust.

After you line the walls yes you can use 1" foam or a foam bed topper which you can purchase from Wal-Mart for $6.95 CND for a twin.
Line the walls with this and then put a small amount 6-8oz of poly inside the cabinet last.

You will have a good cabinet vibration dampner (tiles)
foam and poly for acoustic absorbtion and control.

I know not the most logistical but if it works why not :!:
