I'll take this on. I'm mere days from being up and running, and 2 RM/x, a Larger or an Earthquake Supernova, and two QLS-1 Infinities for the back channels... I'm going to prove that *nothing* goes lower than I do. :-)

You are a better man than I am.  I had every intention of trying that last week.  Then I looked at my daughter's doll house and all the miniature stuff on one and the console that holds my liquor and humidor sitting over the other.  I gave up.  Keep us posted.  I am going to visit John in August.  So, I will report back on the infamous Caselerian push-pull-sansabase-bellyup Larger setup.

Hi Rosconey,

Anything I can do to help I will gladly do, including accepting your curse.

Looking forward to seeing a pic and sonic description of your results.

Actually unless you have the bass right, you "can't" get the midrange right, since all frequencies are related.

One band without the other sounds "lonesome".

But to answer your qestions, I think I'm approaching "rightness"

Vertical bass benefits 'rediscovered'...
Now that we've got some interest in vertical bass going...let's get B going also.  Some years ago, my inquiry for some Original (vertical) Largers was met with (paraphrase)  "There is no demand for vertical alignments".  My thinking...if you don't offer it, how could there be much demand?  A few weeks ago, someone posted a pic of the Super Tower III's.  I had a thought...why not make this setup modular?  Have the 75" ribbon detachable.  Allow folks to buy the Bass Towers separately.  Heck...make the Bass Towers 2 piece...2 twelves each 'module'.  You could settle for 1 dual twelve, or 4 twelves per side...stack 'em.  B could also make the ribbons in different configurations.  4x8, 6x8, 8x8, etc.  Over time, one could 'build-up' a set of STIII, or close to it.  I wonder how many folk would be interested in changing out their 'lowboys' for some vertical stuff?

Hmmm, replace furniture with Larger subs.  I like where this is going.  Use a couple horizontally for a coffee table and a vertical one for an end table?

Actually, get them finished in a nice veneer (Rosewood?) and put a slab of granite on top and that could be quite attractive!

The granite would be just for looks, of course... the fact that it would weigh down and damp the sub would be a completely unintended side-effect! :D

Edit: spelling

That thing promises to be scary. :-)

This gives me two ideas, both insane.

One is to build a box out of rough granite slabs. HDF is great, but when you want something that absolutely isn't going to move, it's hard to beat stone. I got this idea watching my sub operating - it shakes like a leaf in the wind at low frequencies. Of course, no idea how I'd get the speaker mounted...

The other is weirder. I have this soffit in my ceiling. It's only about 1' deep, but it covers a lot of surface area, and the sides of it will be made of fiberglass OC703 insulation and cloth. Mounting a down firing woofer or two in the bottom of the soffit would give a large, damped "cabinet" with hundreds of square inches of semi-permeable sides.

I wish I knew enough theory to determine what that would do. It's not something I'm just going to whip out a saws-all and try...

Scottmayo, Your second idea puts you dangerously close to building an infinite baffle sub. Don't underestimate the power of displacement. And it IS just a matter of grabbing the sawzall    I've had people look under my couches for bass shakers after watching movies, unable to believe that nothing mechanical was connected. Not to mention it's some of the smoothest bass I've heard wiht music.

There's almost unimpeded air flow between the inside of the soffit and the outside - the sides are not solid, just sheets of OC 703 and burlap. I'm suspect air would move in and out and do strange things to the sound: I just wish I had a way to model it to be sure. I'd love to have a good quality sub for music; and a pair of insane 18" monsters just for movies, and "mine's bigger" arguments. :-)

Those infinite baffle designs are cool because you don't have a massive sub (or three -- as I have) sitting in the room.  Instead, they're hidden.  I wanted to buy a house with an unfinished basement so that I could do something along those lines.  Alas, such houses were out of my price range.

Then what you really want is an Eminent Technology Model 17. :)

The Tymphany LAT may also prove to be just the thing for bass lovers.

 :o

Um, dude... that's a 13,000$ window fan. It might be a really, really precise fan and I bet it really does put out LF energy, but... I mean, my sense of appropriateness just completely rebels. You can get about 40, high quality tactile transducers for that price. There aren't 40 people I'd *let* in my HT. :-)

That might be the "ticket price" for 5Hz.

It is easy to get to 20Hz today, if your room will support it, but those last 15Hz might cost dearly.

The IB might be your least expensive option.
