How you guys deal with a NOISE generated by audio card

When you connect your audio card (small jack out) to your receiver
(RCA) then there is a problem with ground noise.
Try this - connect it and then without playing anything put volume up - you will hear the ground noise. If you disconect audio card and volume up - almost no noise - HUGE DIFFERENCE.

Many times it is tuner which is responsible for that, but not in my case - I have disconected tuner.

Any solutions? Do you have the same?

I was thinking about connecting by SPDIF or optical but my receiver is old and does not have this imputs...

I have SB Live Platinium.

I use something called Hi-Fi Link - it is a USB connection device for the PC and the a little box (looks like a silver cigar container) that then has RCA's from it (50' cord).  No hum for me and the USB audio drivers are included as part of XP.  For me and my needs it works fine.
