The two very obvious places to start would be PSU upgrades, which really matters, especially in digital circuitry, and with the clock circuit.
... I wonder if a SLA battery might be simpler/easier/better than modding the power supply? This assumes you are willing to recharge it, of course, but I imagine time between chargings would be rather long...Just a thought...
