I am hearing some hiss and thinking of getting new tubes.  Not noticeable when music is playing but detectable from a meter or so from speakers when there is no music signal.  None at all  if preamp is off. The preamp will be ten years old this year and I am 2nd owner, FWIW.

The original tube complement is two 6DJB/6922 tubes and I bought a two JJ 6922 replacements from AVA a couple years ago.

Current AVA price is $50 for a pair.

I would appreciate any comments on options.  While I think my ears are pretty good and I can sometimes hear the differences among different recordings (LP vs CD vs HDCD vs low cost streaming choices) I'm not going after the never-final edge of possible improvements with crazy prices.  Paired with an AVA SS amp, I have been satisfied with the sound which favors some warmth, good sound stage, etc and is forgiving of less-than-perfect recordings.  Not looking to become a tube roller.

Good sound and longevity and reasonable costs are my criteria. (Is it one of those things that you can have 2 but never 3?)  If there's something out there at $100 a pair that would likely boost  sound or longevity I'd give them a shot.  Other ideas are welcome.

Thanks.

  • Without music, life would be a mistake.
The JJ's are fine, if you decide to get another pair you'll still be happy with the sound.

For a budget NOS pick I'd rec the Phillips 6922, a more musical sounding tub but still with an excellent amount of clarity.

I find the JJ E88CC Gold to be a fine tube at $25 ea.  https://www.thetubestore.com/jj-e88cc-6922
