Cheap acoustic cloth?!
« on: 31 May 2005, 02:28 am »
http://www.magnafabrics.com/category/340.htm

They claim 0.99$/yard for wide strips, in bulk. This being a whole lot less than anyone else's acoustic cloth, or even waste muslin, I'm suspicious. Has anyone bought this stuff? Is it basically loose weave scrap cheesecloth under a fancy name?

I've requested samples; I'll let people know what I find out. In the meantime, any info appreciated. They don't show color samples or give cloth weights, unfortunately...

Please do post when you get the material.  If it works out OK, it would be a nice option for DIY projects.  My only concern would be that being 100% poly, it might be kind of shiny to put in an HT environment.

Still waiting for my samples. They lost the first request - reading between the lines, they only sell to businesses, so the loss may have been more than happenstance. When I called back and told them I was an acoustics manufacturer (this is at best an example of artistic verisimilitude, added to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative - I expect to resell stereo equipment and consulting services, but I don't see myself as becoming one of Ethan's competitors), they got a *lot* friendlier.

They do 100 yard minimum orders, which happens to work for me because I need about that much.

They never came though. I ended up using 11oz burlap (and I like the way it looks.)

Material for traps

I've spent some time looking for a material to cover two extremely large bass traps (over 10' x 10' of angled wall). I was going to go with burlap, but you can't get it in 10'+ wide strips, and I didn't want seams to show.

I finally found a decent black muslin material, available 126" wide in any number of yards. It's used in backdrops on stages, but passes enough air to be used on traps - seems to be roughly equivalent to burlap, sonically. It's a very flat deep black, not at all shiny, so it's good in video installations. It runs around 10$/yard, though.

But $12/yard for 10 ft wide isn't that bad.  Care to share where?
