Vented vs Ported?
« on: 7 Jan 2026, 06:46 pm »
I get bombarded by stereo/speaker ads in my Facebook feed which I don't really mind because sometimes good stuff pops up that I have never seen or heard of before. Whenever I see a new brand that I have never heard of, I like to peruse and see what they have. Recently I a saw a company that uses "vented" cabinets. How are vents different from ports? Do vents serve the same purpose as ports? What are the pros and cons of vents?

Early B.

Vented and ported are synonymous terms.

Why choose one over the other?

  • To whom more was given more will be required.
    • Never go to a psychiatrist, adopt a straycat or dog. On the street they live only two years average.

Today near all woofers are suited to ported enclosures, they have EBP very over 50.
Currently woofers even run well in ported and Sealed boxes also as various from Eminence.
With EBP under 50 the woofer are suited to Sealed box.

While I don’t doubt this is a correct response, I have no idea what it means.

Sorry for that, the EBP is a TS parameter.
( efficiency bandwidth product )
the calc are:  Fs / Qes

It is used to determine if a speaker is more suitable for sealed or vented design.
The rule of thumb are EBP close to 100 or more indicates a speaker is best suited to a vented enclosure.

EBP closer to 50 or less usually indicates a speaker best suited to closed box design.
This is a starting point. Some designers violated this rule.
Qts also should be considered.
