Where Are They Now?

My son has owned these beauties for three years. They look and sound fantastic. Below is the original thread talking about their pedigree.

I recall this project as it is the only time we used the taller RAAL tweeter (by request). This type of project kept me interested in building.

I hope your son gets many more years of enjoyment from them.  Thanks.

I think I was the original owner of these…though I think Jim made them for someone else.  Hope they continue to provide great sound for your son!

Jim… at one point I owned the Veracity ST with the RAAL 70-20 and I’ve also owned speakers with the smaller RAAL 64-10. I never felt the 64-10 presented music as realistically as the larger RAAK tweeters… maybe artificially too spacious???  Does this make sense, is there a technical reason why the three RAALs should sound different?

I would guess, and it is a guess, that since the larger ribbons have more surface area, they can be crossed lower.  The lower the crossover point, the more the transparent ribbon will handle.  So, with a smaller ribbon, you have to cross higher to avoid damage.  In the process, more of the midrange is coming from the woofer (or midrange) and the sound will be a bit less detailed.  That's my guess.

If you’re inclined to share Jim…I’m curious about what you miss and what you don’t miss?
