The way my room is organised my speakers have to live on the window ledge. The speakers are Q Acoustics 2020i with rear facing ports.
I was wondering if there were any thoughts on replacing with forward facing ports i.e. Elac Debut 5.2 . I don't think anything much bigger would fit without blocking out the daylight!
I'll be honest and say I'm pretty happy with the Q Acoustics, and appreciate I will only really find out if there's a difference with a proper room trial. But just wondered about the theory; is bouncing the sound waves off the window pane (double glazed!! )  a good thing or bad?

I don’t think much will help with your problem, the close proximity to the windows is a no no on sound. I guess you can try to plug up the ports with a rolled up sock and see if that helps a little.

The only way you will get good sound out of your speakers, will be to get them into free space.

That must be a huge window ledge.  I second toocool4 here, you have very nice speakers, maybe the best budget bookshelves available, changing to front firing ports may smooth out the lower bass a touch,  but the compromise from the general placement issues won't be solved with a speaker change.  I would recommend treatment first.  The sock puppet in the port is cheap and easy to try.  Is there a way to place temporary treatments behind the speakers when listening?  You could go diy or buy something, GIK here on AC are great.  I have a similar issue in my 2.1 "home theater" setup and used my diy panels (2" fiberglass covered in fabric) to great effect.  Of course they do nothing for bass frequency, but really smooth out the mids and treble.  Maybe you could fashion something to cover the windows that could be removed after listening sessions.  Best of luck.

Pictures of your setup will always help, but the basics of speaker placement against any reflective surface will be the same.  Others can correct me if I misspeak, but I believe your only real problem will be boom and bloom.  Reflective surfaces for well placed speakers will mess with sound stage but not as much as placing them against the front wall.  You’ll never generate any depth.  Absorption as mentioned will probably help but you should also consider first reflection points regardless of front wall placement and treatments.
