Wendell's new speaker
« on: 8 Oct 2025, 03:08 am »
Wendell sent me some photos of his new dipole woofer, the PlanarBASS, and I suggested that I put them online. He was only too happy to oblige! The sides on this one are solid maple, but the concept is that the customer can choose any material he wants and Wendell will arrange to have them fabricated from CAD. This version also includes the analog crossover boards -- he says that the Danville DSP option is ideal, but that the analog boards are for purists who don't want to digitize the signal.

That does look much better and it's nice to have the option to have them match the speakers.
I see they added a video showing a pair of them with 1.7s.
https://www.planarbass.com/

For a pair of these subs, it looks to be $8000 in electronics, $2500 for the speakers (more or less) plus the cost of whatever cables you use.
That's what they showed in the video, I'm not sure what the pricing would be on the ones that Josh pictured.
Contact Wendell for details, I suppose.

I was surprised at the price when Wendell told me:

"The side panels can be of stone, wood, glass or metal. I'll help customers get exactly what they want for side panels with no profit or markup for my new company (Diller Designs). If they want plywood painted with a spray can, that can be done. The base price is $1,300 each. I'd like to see photos of their rooms to make any estimate of bass response, as I did at Magnepan."

I assume the base price is without the WiiN crossover, since they're open architecture and can be used with the analog XO (which is a shelving circuit rather than a conventional crossover) or DSP.

Also, he's taking them on the road, with Canada the first destination:

Codell Audio (Montreal) Wednesday, October 22nd
Audio Excellence (Toronto) Saturday, October 25th

Those events are RSVP and those who attend will be asked to post their honest impressions online.
