JVC RX-F10 to power a pair of Dynaudio?
« on: 25 May 2005, 12:41 pm »
Dear Sirs,

I have the opportunity to buy a used JVC RX-F10 receiver.
I would like to use it only in a stereo set-up with a pair of Dynaudio speakers (mod. Recital, old 3 way).
The problem is that the woofers need a lot of current and control.
Is the JVC good for the purpose?
Any other suggestion (about a stereo amp) would be very appreciated and welcome.

Thank you very much and kind regards,

I don't feel this is a high-current amp.  If your woofers need a lot of current, you will probably be disappointed.

I have 89db 4ohm B&W 2 1/2 way speakers, and the F10 provides me with great upper midrange and treble, but the low end misses most of the slam and punch that should be there.  Also, the lower midrange is not what it should be.  I swapped in my friend's Harmon-Kardon home theater traditional SS amp, and all the punch and slam came back.  It was like the bass on my speakers "woke up."  The lower midrange filled out a lot, as well.  But...the high end on the HK was unlistenable after having the F10.  I love the F10's open, detailed, airy but never grainy sound.  So I'm still using the F10, but I do miss the low frequencies a lot.

Dear Sir,

Thank you very much for your very kind and extremely valuable reply.
Unfortunately my experience is that Dynaudio woofers are very difficult to drive properly even if they are exceptional for other reason (75mm diameter coil !). :|
They indeed need high current and high damping capability.
My search goes on.
May be I should stick with a more traditional amp.
I would be grateful if you could give me any suggestion
Ah, by the way I live in Europe. So some alternatives might not be available here.

Kind regards,

Hi beppe, I don't know enough about amps to make a recommendation, although I'm sure others here can.  But I have one idea for you: if you can meet other audiophiles where you live, perhaps someone around you has an F10 who would be willing to bring it over so you could try it out on your speakers.  Even if they don't have an F10, they might have other amps so you could get an idea of what will match best with your speakers, traditional solid state vs. "digital" vs. tubes, etc.  Maybe there's even an audio club or society near you?

I'm the type of person who loves to read the reviews, get excited about a piece of gear, then order it online and eagerly anticipate its arrival.  But I'm learning that there's no substitute for trying out a piece of gear in your own system before purchase (or being able to return it if you don't like it).  :D

Dear Sir,

Thank you very much indeed again for your kind and valuable reply. :)
You are completely right about auditioning before purchasing. :|
I did a lot of bad buys in the past just on the basis of nice reviews.
Sure these Dynaudio a quite demanding in term of amplification.
May be a wiser move would be buy another pair of speakers easier to drive. :|

Anyway thank you very much for your kind and much appreciated help.

Kind regards,
