New Vinyl Blues
« on: Yesterday at 12:31 am »
My friend that runs a record store got word to me that he had bought a large jazz collection... mostly new high quality repressings.  So another friend an I picked up 15-20 titles, many of which are Blue Note Classic Series with good reviews.
A week goes by and my buddy calls Hto ask me to listen to one of his- Herbie Hancock "Speak like a child".  One side distorted, and he wanted to get my 2 cents.  Got half way  though side 1 and it was clearly not right.   Got up to take a look and an inch long pile of crap was building up about mid record.
Same thing on side two.  I had assumed he'd cleaned, but he hadn't.
I've never seen so much debris come out of the groves of what looked like a clean, new record.

The store owner said it was getting to be a problem with all vinyl, though he was surprised to hear about it from Blue Note.  He blamed the fact that all presses worldwide are running 24/7 to meet demand.

When I buy records be it new or secondhand, the first thing I do before they come anywhere near my record player is, they get cleaned with the record cleaner and put into a brand new anti-static sleeve.
I have had people say to me why do you clean brand new records, my answer to them is have you seen the inside of record pressing plants? They are not the cleanest of places.

Buying a record cleaner is the most cost effective thing I did for my records / stylus, cleaning every record means I get longer life out of my stylus.  :thumb:

I always clean mine as well.  I'm surprised my buddy didn't as we both have ultrasonic cleaners.
But after seeing the inch long line of crud that came off my stylus, I'll make double sure I clean any new vinyl.

I concur with all the above.  Nothing goes under the needle without being cleaned first.  I use a Nitty Gritty 1.5 with my own brew of fluid.  Been working very well for 25 years.

15-20% Isopropyl Alcohol
A few drops of Photo-Flo 200
Distilled Water

The adhesive lips on my Nitty Gritty 1.5 don't tolerate more than a 20% solution.  The Adhesive fails and they fall off.  I usually make a quart at a time.
