Changing captive power cord
« on: 24 Jun 2025, 09:38 pm »
I have a 600R amplifier with the factory power cord.  Has anyone changed the cord or installed an iec outlet.  Thanks!

Yes. I have had 2 Van Alstine amps in the older chassis with the captive 2-wire power cord. The easiest fix is to use a C13 Power Adapter Connector like shown in the 2 links below. It's up to you how much of the existing cord you want to leave. I cut the existing cord to about 6 inches long for ease of attaching the adapter.

On my other AVA amp a Mechanical Engineer friend professionally cut out the correct size hole to mount an IEC inlet. He did a great job. Unfortunately, he is no longer local to me.

Not sure why you should spend to remove the free excellent factory power cord to add twelve connections to your amp feed.

He's probably looking to use a better power cord, which improves the sound if you find one that suits the system.

I did something similar with an Adcom 555 amp, come with a captive 16ga. cord. To use a 12ga. cord I drilled out the hole in chassis to accommodate a nipple large enough to fit the larger cord. It was a little difficult to ensure the metal filings didn't get all over the internal circuit boards but the results were worth the hassle. No way would I have attempted to put an IEC in there.
I have since sold that amp.

Looking at the images in the link below, this mod may be a bit of work. Without an image of where the power cord is soldered into the unit, it is hard to say if any of the circuit boards will need to be removed to get at the power leads.

Replacing the existing cord with a new captive one will be massively easier than trying to put in an IEC socket. If I had to enlarge the hole I would get a second set of hands to hold a vacuum hose while I enlarged the existing hole to minimize the amount of metal swarf finding its way into to the unit. I don't know if putting blue tape on both sides of the hole would help minimize the swarf.

There are YouTube videos showing you how to do both.

Good luck. Keep us posted.

Why do you want to do this?

I have swapped power cords and I did notice slightly more bass with my AVA Vision SET 400 amp. I got a lot more bass when I added a REL sub so that is where your money should go. You will get a whole lot more bang for your buck with a sub.

I have heard the 600R in my system and at a friends house. I prefer the slight added warmth of the SET 400 with my speakers. The 600R was a little too clinical with some sharpness.

I changed the tubes in my Van Alstine Fet Valve CFR Preamp to CV4024/12AT7 Mullard, NOS/NIB and Genalex Gold Lion B749/ECC82/12AU7 reissues. The change is subtle but important, the preamp no longer has a tendency to sound sharp on some music. I blame the original JJ tubes.

The 600R has two 12AT7 tubes. Have you swapped the tubes to another brand yet? You might just hear a nice change without cutting into the cabinet to install a socket.

Thanks for all of the feedback-as a fet-valve fan I am interested in elevating their performance (I have 3 ).  Of course I have tried different tubes and currently use a pair of 6201 gold pins. The biggest upgrade so far has been adding the FI-15M Plus(R) Furutech power plug which is an easy upgrade.  It would be nice if Van Alstine would offer an iec replacement service-I asked this years ago but Frank did not want to get involved.  Thanks everyone!
