VMPS Spam???
« on: 1 Apr 2003, 09:41 pm »
This is a weird one.  Today I got what appears to be spam from vmpsaudio@aol.com.  Subject is "A very good tool"  Anyone else happen to receive this?  Hell, I get hundreds of spams per week on that account but I thought it was extra bizarre to see that it allegedly came from VMPS.  I assume it's a forged header of course.  Any clues?  No idea what the attachment is, but I ain't touchin' it with a ten foot pole!

Nathan,

It's probably one of the Outlook worms. Some of them read the infected machine's address list and send mail to users on the list. In addtion, some of them send mail as another user from the address list. Usually if there are attachments they are the worm trying to spread itself.

On Windows systems .SCR files are screen saver files. These are executables and can cause much grief. IIRC you are running a Mac, so that won't be an issue. :)

AOL accounts can also be hacked into... I was suddenly getting junk/Ads/porno mail from one of my buddies with aol account-and this guy got all sorts of hate mail later    ...fortunately aol acted fast enough...

Hope this is not the case and is just a worm as Mike pointed out...

Cheers,
Kishore

Ahh yes indeed, I suspected as much.  I steer clear of as many Microsoft products as possible, it cuts the nefarious activity down considerably! :D

Use of the trademark VMPS would be trademark infringement for the obvious reason that it causes confusion.  Brian could spank the perpetrator if he wanted to and could find him/her.

It's a virus/worm

Brian is probably not even infected.  Some of these viruses send messages as someone in the infected person's address book.

Oh man, if I could ever get my hands on a known spammer, spanking would be the very last thing on my mind to do to them!

"Trademark"?  That's precious.  I got a kick out of that!  Brings me back to the old days of "two guys in a garage" in El Sobrante.  "Trademark" & "VMPS" are oxymoronic.

I just read an article about spam and there is this Detroit spammer who is said to be the worlds biggest spammer and accounts for a healthy portion of the spam.  His name was given, although I don't remember it, but I sometimes wonder why wackos like disgruntled postal workers don't take their agressions out in a more productive way and snap off this dude.  I don't think anyone would really care.

I thinking the scene where her legs went backwards around Arnie's waist is flashing through your mind, right?   :P
