Hello from NY
« on: 25 May 2025, 06:30 pm »
Hi, this is Ray and I'm a resident of the greater NYC area. Born and raised in Brooklyn, and now currently residing on Long Island. I would not call myself an audiophile per say but I am an avid TV fan (much more so than film), which is what brings me here. I am a big Panasonic fan and loyalist and was very happy to their return to the US/North American markets a year back. However, after purchasing a 65" Panasonic OLED display I found the color depth and motion handling were no match for my much older plasmas. Now I'm on the hunt for a 65" Panasonic TC-P65ZT60 (fingers crossed) or TC-P65VT60. Wish me luck!

I did not know that Phil. How long did you live there and where did you live in Brooklyn.  I grew up off of Flatlands Ave and Utica Ave on E57 St between Ave J and K.  I lived there from 1958 to 1976 when I left to go to college at Oklahoma State University. I never looked back.  Brooklyn was fun in the 60's -70's

Welcome to AC.

I spent a couple years in Brooklyn on Floyd Bennet Field at the end of Flatbush Ave and went to Marine Park school off base.
A great experience that I never want to do again
I’m a country boy at heart.
You’re in good hands here.

Cool, we use to watch the military jets take off from Floyd Bennet Field.

I used to ride my bike to Marine Park and play Paddle Ball and Basketball.  I doubt anyone outside of NYC knows what paddle ball is.  What a great game.

We use to play Stoop Ball at the school at the big steps out back.
Loved living on Floyd Bennet. My first girlfriend was a Marines daughter, my dad was a naval officer.
Left there in 82’ to come up to my home town upstate in the Binghamton area.
Nobody knew about this place. Then EJ Shoes came along and built Endicott NY. One mile from my house is the first IBM builds as this is the birthplace for IBM. Last month they starting tearing all the IBM building down and converting others to house Lockheed Martin where presidential helicopters are made. At least part of them.
It’s nice talking to someone who even knows what FBF is. Thanks for the nostalgic chat!

We used to play stoop ball all the time.   Also played a lot of stick ball.  I broke more bats then I can count.

I also used to ride my bike to the beaches in Rockaway.  Growing up in uptown Brooklyn was great fun.   There was so much to do and you could walk, ride your bike or take the bus or trains to get anywhere for cheap back them.  We also hung out at Sheepshead bay.  Loved all the fresh seafood there.  I am 66, so I am dating myself.

I lived a few places.  Sheepshead Bay and Coney Island the longest.  I was in Coney Island from around 1957 to 1965.  I was in Sheepshead Bay again for about a couple of years in the mid 1970s.

Phil, do you remember a restaurant called Lundys? We also hung out at Joe's Clam Bar and Randazzos.

Lundys closed then reopened years later and closed again. Randazzo's great fried Calamari

Of course - I can still hear the clanging of the dishes when they used to pile the empty trays and plates on those tall carts.  I'm not a seafood guy but I remember those other two restaurants.  Also, I remember the old Automats in Manhattan - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automat

We used to eat at Lundy's about 3 times per year and for special occasions to eat Lobster and Steamer Clams.

When I was about 5 years old, when my mother would go shopping in Manhattan, she would take me along and we would have lunch at an Automat.

I really miss the Pizza and NY Cheese Cake.

They have Junior's (of Brooklyn of course) original Cheesecake recipe (and I think one other one).  There was a fire many moons ago and the recipe was in a safe and the firemen had to open it and the recipe got out.  I make it a few times/year.

Played paddle ball all the time in the Bronx and at Orchard beach. I play racquetball twice a week with a guy who still plays handball on the weekend in Brooklyn.

How many of these did you lose?

Home plate was a rock, 1st base was a car door, 2nd base a manhole cover and third was whatever was there.

Grew up in Da Bronx. Like Bklyn but better  :icon_lol:
