NX-Ottica Center Channel
« on: 24 May 2025, 09:04 pm »
I was going to ask this on the NX-bravo center build thread but didn't want to go off subject.  I seen the  NX-Ottica  center channel at Danny's and it is very impressive looking.  As we all know the NX-Ottica is built for Hi-End 2 channel audio and the center is adapted for Home Theater.  I would like to hear from anyone that has it in their home theater their thoughts?  Danny and Hobbs chime in also please.

I haven't had the NX Center in my setup but I DO have the NX-Oticas in my HT setup downstairs and they are pretty much the perfect HT speaker, IME.  Punchy and full range with incredible clarity and crazy huge soundstage that the movies benefit enormously from.

I have the NX-center speaker.  Its paired with the Oticas.  It sounds really really good.  It disappears into the screen.  You feel like all the center speaker sound is coming from the people on the tv.  It is the best center speaker I have heard.

That's good to hear.  I bet that speaker is as wide as your screen.  Do you do anything for the bottom end?

The screen is 130” and it takes up a significant horizontal foot print of the screen.   For Bass I employ 4 subwoofers.  2 of GR researches double open baffle servo subs flanking the oticas and 2 Rythmik sealed subs.  One is a Dual Opposed servo sub with two 15” woofers and the other is a sealed single 15.

Is your OB subs wired into the Left and Right Ottica's to make them full range?  Just curious if you play the sealed subs when you listen to 2 channel music?

This is exactly my next upgrade path right here.   I have the X-Static / X-Voce setup with the Double Troubles and a pair of sealed SVS subs.  I just haven't decided if I'm going to do this in my current theater or wait for the next house.   Unfortunately that might not happen for another decade, so we shall see.  My screen is 135".  How close is your main listening position to the center channel?  My only concern going this route right now is my primary seating row is only about 10' from the screen.

My OB subs are wired to my Processor using the sub outputs.  I cross the Oticas over at 80hz to the OB subs.  I have a couple different speaker preset settings where I can turn all the subs on or just use the OBs.  I go back N forth using the sealed subs for 2 channel.  Depends on the genre of recordings and my mood.  As for my listening position.  I am 9’ from the center speaker while in the front row of the theater room and I am 17’ if I sit in the back row of the room.  Honestly, it doesn't matter where you sit.  The sound is perceived virtually the same.  The room is very evenly filled.

I have used “box” speakers my entire life.  Started in the 80’s with brands like Infinity, Klipsch, JBL, Advent, Paradigm etc.  I moved to DIY designs in my 30’s.  Built many box diy projects always looking for the next best thing.  My last box design was the Statement 2 from Jim Holtz and Kurt Campbell.   They use a pass thru on the mids similar to open baffle concept.  Blew me away the first time I heard the open stage presence they offered.  Then I tried Dannys Otica.  Simply the best I have built yet. The open baffle offered me what I was always missing.  No speaker design is perfect but the Otica checked most of the boxes for me so I built the NXcenter.  It makes the vocals and center stage disappear into the screen and never sounds like it’s coming from a box in front of me.  Love it.  If you can fit it in your system, I don't see how it would not sound great.

In the past open baffle was ignored by many because of the steep roll off in the bass register.  Now with the partnership of Danny and Brian Ding of Rythmik marrying up OB with Servo, you can control the bass and get the room flat to 20hz with relative ease and still get tight controlled musical bass.  Add in a sealed sub for the movie thump and it is awesome.  Not sure how accurate the Umik1 is with rew down below 20 but my room shows flat to 10hz.  Im scared to go lower than that on a sweep for fear of damaging something.  Doesn't matter anyway to me below 20 cause I have bass shakers in the HT seats for that rumbling.
