I did the sealed sub in rear thing
« on: 23 Apr 2025, 04:21 am »
I stuck my sealed subs about the same distance from listening position as the open baffle, but behind me. They are pointing towards the side walls positioned near the center from side walls. I did that because it looked too cluttered at the side walls and they sit right behind my pool table. They are set at about 32hz and 180 out of phase, LR48 crossover.

I didn’t tinker with the settings, but so far like what it did to the sound.

Turn them so that they are facing the front of the room and hear what happens.

Danny is this the best way to mix sealed subs with open baffle or is their a better way?

I’ll try it, even though they could be positioned better, the set up gave more (plenty) of bottom end punch and especially helps with movies. The sound stage is more immersive, hearing content (not bass) seeming to come behind me on a two channel setup.

If anyone has both types of subs on hand and haven’t tried this yet, I think it’s definitely worth the time try out.  Though I have a long room, so not sure how well it would work in a more normal sized room.

The combination of open baffle (Double Troubles) with sealed subs combined with Sound Shakers in the theater seats is unbelievable.   I have two sealed (one front center and one rear center 180 out of phase) connected to LFE and the open-baffles connected to the high level inputs in L/R that cover most of the film's music.  The sealed subs augment the ceiling speakers, center channel and surrounds (X On Walls).

So, yeah, I'm definitely a fan of combining open baffle and sealed.  At the moment, the sealed are AVS SB-2000, but I may replace them at some point with GR Research sealed servo subs.
