Speakers for large open room
« on: 26 Mar 2025, 12:23 am »
I have a large open with another area inside it that is 16 wide (speaker wall), 23.5  deep with ceilings that slope up from 8.90 to an apex of 13.5 with a beam going down the middle.
The first floor is open-concept.   That said: what are excellent speakers for a huge room? Love detail and that seductive midrange of a Merlin VSM but the room is too big for them I suspect.  I have some audio physic Virgos2 that are doing fairly well.  (12 feet apart with serious toe in per designers guidance)

Love spendor,  OG - audio physic vintage sound,  Naim, EAR tube integrated,  and the dynamics of Genelec to Naim a few.  Big Klipsch are just not refined enough from my experiences.  Suggestions!    A guy has some Reference 3a Grand Veena’s for sale in my 20k person town I want to check out.   Any ideas?

Early B.

Why do you need big speakers? Are you going to throw loud parties? Do you like to rock out at ear-bleeding levels? Instead of big speakers, consider augmenting your existing speakers with multiple subwoofers. You'll also need to dive deep into the study of room acoustics. Post pics of your room when you can. The open concept may be a problem.

Check some OB speakers or even DIY.
This is a inexpensive DIY project from an AC member,
It have only four (4) parts:
Eminence Alpha15A + 4.7mH + Visaton B200 and a MDF baffle.

Other option are the Lii Audio F15 FR driver $399/pair, not each.
Here Decware OB with the Lii Audio F15 driver:

If one have a woodworker is possible try the Lii Audio F15($399/Pair, pair not each) 97dB/8Ω and benign impedance curve suited to OB or Bass Reflex box or the F18($540/pair), no Crossover, no Tweeter beaming, no Phase rotation, no driver sensitivity loss, no Harmonics loss, no Retail price.

My personal choice is the Lii F18 in Single Driver configuration, but if you make question of wanting a 2-Way speaker you may want a bigger woofer than the Alpha15A, so there are W18 inches and W21 inches from Lii Audio, personally I dont like these two VCs woofers, they are hard to drive with a small tube amp.

Definitely check out the Reference 3a Grand Veena’s. Your music preferences kind of determine your choice. Two speakers for classical music that come to mind are:

Magnepan 3.7i

Philharmonic BMR Tower
See the glowing review in this months Stereophile magazine.

Are the speakers used for TV or home theater? Legacy Audio speakers are big, dynamic and delicate to.

Maybe you keep the speakers you have and add 2 REL subwoofers. I would opt for the No.31s but a couple of Carbon Specials would balance out the sound nicely. Most of the time you won't even notice they are on but your main stereo speakers now sound like Class A+ full range speakers.

Don't write this recommendation off just because I own them , but...
the first time I heard the Von Schweikert Endeavor SEs (now known as the Von Schweikert Model One or One.loudspeaker), they were playing in the Potomac Room, the biggest exhibit room at Capital Audiofest, and most people thought that it was a pair of VSA's megabuck Ultra Series that was playing.
New-from-the-store, they're $27k.  Going price for preowned is somewhere between $17k and $20k.

I suggest,  if you're going big in a big space,  you consider higher sensitivity, easy to drive speakers so you don't need an arc welder of an amp to drive them. I love my 96+dB Pure Audio Project Trio15 Horn1 speakers for my mid-sized room. Had I a room of your size I would step up to the Quintets (four 15" drivers per side vs. two per side). Then select your fav sounding mid/tweet driver. FYI, I drive my Trio15's with a satisfying 4.3 watt stereo amp.
Good luck in your quest!

Magico 's-They give a very clean, detailed and resolving sound.  Very nice speaker.

Magnepans 1.7i's with dual subwoofers like a pair of Rythmik servo F12se subs with thee GR research drivers or a pair of Magnepan 3.7i's and dual subs

Bryston Middle and Model T.  We heard these at RMAF and they sounded great.  Very smooth and listenable.  Good musicality.

Monitor Audio Gold 500 6G, Platinum 300 3G

Fyne Audio 702's  I love this speaker and almost bought a pair and then covid hit.  Beautiful sounding and finished speakers.  They have a huge sweet spot.  If I wasn't planning on retiring in  years and downsizing I would buy these in a heartbeat.  These speakers are that good.

Dynaudio

Dali Epcon 8, Epikore to name a few.  We heard Dali at one of the last RMAF and my son and I were blown away by the sound of all their rooms.  They all had a very pleasing neutral to slightly warmer sound and were very musical and just a real pleasure to listen to.  We thought all their rooms stole the show.

If you can, give a listen to some Dali's and the Fyne Audio 702's, you will not want to get out of the listening chair.

interesting replies Early B. Never said I needed big speakers, just a big room. No parties and no to your other snarky comments.  I have 3 REL subs for the room.  The open concept IS the problem per my question. Thanks for the….hum….input?

Thanks, I’ve been thinking about open baffles, but want to hear some first.  Moved to Durango recently so not many audio enthusiasts here from what I can tell.   Thanks again for valuable feedback. Cheers

I love Maggie’s. The concentric point source is very appealing to me as well but didn’t want to spend 12 k.  Thanks for feedback.

spot on on the REL! i have some REL’s: Stadium iii, storm iii, T9i and a habitat1 That I am going to incorporate into the virgo2s.  I have had the  ap virgo2s forever & they are great and yes it is for music and theater.   I  have 2 pairs of  ap step se that I could use for surrounds and sides and a Celsius center.   Thanks for input.

love this idea,  PAP is on the audition list, I just moved to Durango Co and there is 0 high end here.   I almost bought some avantgarde unos at an auction but hadn’t closed on the house yet so didn’t want to commit if the large room wasn’t going to happen.   What speakers did you have prior to PAP? Thanks

I had EgglestonWorks Fontaines (original version, plus two 12" subs, so virtual Andra's) driven by Audio Mirror 45Watt SET amps. I liked the sound very much but craved a more open, transparent sound, so auditioned these open baffle/horn speakers and fell in love with them. Big, open, transparent, deep sound, yet still proper meat on the bone. The most proper-toned, realistic, dynamic, engaging music I've experienced. And no desire for subs any longer.

You want refined sound, with explosive dynamics, that can operate on flea power? Look no further... https://voltiaudio.com/lucera/

The magnepan 2.7i and 1.7i are much less expensive and will work in that room, especially with a sub or preferably 2 subs.  I am a Maggie guy and run the 1.6's in a 17x17'x10 room and the 1.6's can easily overwhelm the room with sound.

You'll get no shortage of speaker suggestions from us. You haven't mentioned your budget. Here is my first suggestion (because I own a pair): Daedalus Audio Apollo speakers. Second suggestion: DeVore Fidelity O/96 speakers. I listened to a pair of them just 10 days ago, and left the shop very impressed. Third suggestion: Volti Audio speakers. Greg offers a few different levels ranging in price from ~$7500/pr to 'a lot more'. I visited his showroom about 3 weeks ago, and listened to his Razz speakers.....and left thinking "And these are his entry level speakers!!!".

Lastly, something very different: I very nearly bought this kit for my vacation home, but realized that they're just too big for the space <and my wife would have had a fit!> http://www.troelsgravesen.dk/Faital-3WC-15.htm

Enjoy the search for new speakers.

What is your budget?  On one hand you stated you wanted to look at a 20K pair of speakers and then you said that you did not want to spend 12K.  Or is it that you want to spend around 20K?

Other speakers to look at that are below 10K-

Wharfedale Elysians- These sound good and look fabulous.  They will fill up that big room of yours.

https://www.wharfedaleusa.com/collections/elysian#

Monitor Audio Silver 500 7G, Gold 500 6G

Bryston Middle T.  We heard these at RMAF and they sounded great.  Very dynamic, no grain or fatigue.  They put out big sound and sounded great with their gear and a lousy room.

Certainly do not rule out Maggies if you like them.  The 2.7i and 1.7i are both way less than 10K and will work in your room.  Put those REL subs to work.
