Tube Testing Settings for 5AR4
« on: 21 Mar 2025, 10:05 pm »
For any tube testing folks out there...   I have an EICO 625 that generally works for me ok.  The only difficulty I'm having is testing the 5AR4.  I'm getting nothing.  I don't think it is lighting up at all.  Other tube types work fine in the same socket.

The settings in my 1978 (latest) book are:
Shunt=20
Filament= 5.0
Selector=4
Levers Up / Down = 4 / 8 and 6 / 8

I understand there are several of the same or nearly the same model under other brands such as Knight 600 series, Heathkit, and Triplett 3413.

Anyone have any info that would indicate different settings than I have?

Thanks.....Pete

If the heater is not glowing then take your meter and check continuity between pins 2 & 8. If no continuity then open heater and dead tube.

Thanks, I'll keep that as reference.  However, I found a Knight 600 table online with different settings:

EICO
Shunt=20
Filament= 5.0
Selector=4
Levers Up / Down = 4 / 8 and 6 / 8

Knight
Shunt=26
Filament= 5.0
Selector=3
Levers Up / Down = 4 / 2 and 6 / 2

The Knight settings do light the tube.  It may not be a problem, but two 5AR4's both peg the needle to the right.  That either shows the tubes as very strong or the settings still aren't correct.  Not confidence inspiring that the two tables have such different settings for the same tube!

Knowing that, I think you are right, it is a settings issue.
