GR Research Jay and Southwest Audio fest
« on: 20 Mar 2025, 03:53 am »
I just watched a couple of quick clips on YouTube of Jay from Jay's Audio Channel listening to the NX-Etremes at Danny's and looked like the  NRD speakers at Ron's.  I wish I could be there to join in on the fun.  I can be the guy to switch out the speakers (audio roadie).  I am excited to see what Jay has to say about his visit and what he thinks about the speakers and Danny's system especially compared to all the high dollar equipment he reviews.  I suspect he will be shocked at how good everything sounds.

If I can get away this weekend I am going to take a trip to Dallas to the Southwest Audio Fest.  Is anyone else going?  Hope to see some of you if I can make it.

I will be there with a buddy who is visiting from England. Is GR Research going to have a presence at the show?

I believe Mike Lundy with Uilleam Audio will be there.  He has a set of the mini NX-otica's but I'm not sure if he will have them set up.  Also PureArtFi has the LS6 monitor that Danny designed the crossover.  There might be more but I am not sure.

Danny will be wandering around the show with Ron today, (Friday) and I may sneak down there with Danny tomorrow to see what's new, but we wont have a dedicated room this year.

Have fun.  I may try to get out to Texas later this year, after Danny's room is done.  If I do that, I will ship some gear out a while beforehand.

I went to Southwest Audio Fest on Friday.  It was good time but I only had one day to check it out.  I was pretty rushed to see everything.  I Seen some people that post on here a bit including my friend Mike Lundy.  Met and seen allot of YouTube Guys.  Said Hello to Danny and met Ron with NRD, and Michael the Greek Audio Geek.  The Audiophile Junkie was running a room promoting the Baach which was really interesting.  The show consisted of mostly high end equipment that I will never be able to purchase.  I noticed 90% of the rooms didn't sound good they sounded like great big walls of noise.  Also the volume levels in the rooms where hire than what I would normally listen too.  There was a couple of rooms I did like one was Norman's with PureArtFi. He has some really nice stand mount speakers and some equipment that was ran off batteries which I thought was really interesting.  This was the first time that I was able to see the uber high end equipment.  I will say I have been to Danny's to listen to his system and it was so much better.  So point being you can the price of one set of high end speakers or amplifier etc from the show and build out a great system with some GR Research speakers and room treatment.

The balance Danny gets out of speakers makes them the best I've ever heard.

I also wish there existed a "full range", narrow baffle, passive, multi-driver speaker.  Make it play to very low 30 or high 20hz.  Or even crazier... give it an "Option" for a "high end tweeter".

Sometimes I wonder if the reason that doesn't exist is because of x-max limitations in the drivers since they are setup to have sweet midrange and pass off to a sub.

Is that why?  OK... then offer a "Boutique" option with different drivers, but most importantly, Danny designing it.

Some people don't have a room for OB speakers, but they may also be willing to pay more for the speakers they want that Danny has designed.

What I described is selling drivers and crossover parts... same as the rest.  And it may provide an option for the folks who normally gravitate to the stuff Jay likes to talk about.

Food for thought.

Regarding the gang from GR-Research being at Southwest Audio Fest, I posted another thread about the interviews that Danny and Ron Brenay did at the show with Norm Varney of A/V Roomservice with links to the YT videos here:

Very informative discussion with Norm Varney.

<SNIP>

With all due respect to Danny, I've also heard Andrew Jones (formely of TAD, Elac, and now, MoFi) get wonderful balance at audio shows out of the speakers he's designed.

There’s these.
https://gr-research.com/product/x-mtm-encore/

I already have a pair of those in "AV123" vintage.  I got them for nothing and they are in great shape, well built: however, they do not dig as deep as I'd like.  I got them because the specs say they should play as low as my Duette, but my Duette with single 8" woofer play much lower.  I also wanted an "MTM".  The specs don't tell the story with these and I'm glad I had the test drive.  I may put the T26 tweeter / better parts in the MTM, but I may not... I've also have that pair of Otica-MTM baffles that look like they will bolt right on, I can cut the enclosure and make them a smaller MTM with proper sealed volume, and Neo tweeter.  Lot's of fun / experimenting.

Since we're talking about speakers... I can play the Duette in my very large room (30'+ x 30'+), without subs, and they are fine.  The few people who've heard it think it's incredible.  It is SO good, and I know people just don't know because they just haven't heard it.  That's a shame.

That unfinished box on the floor is the "Duelund Coherent Audio Monitor", and it will fill the room with authority - just like the Duette.  It will be the second pair of 8" 2-ways I own... and it will eat everything my amps can throw at it - but still have the midrange magic.  That's what I want.  The speaker(s) I want don't really exist - so I'm making them.

The thing is, I don't listen loud... but when something else can play loudly and deep with EASE I have found an effortlessness to the sound that I like.  The LS-Encore makes the sound and is one of my very favorite speakers right away since getting them fired up. But they won't do BIG on their own... not like the 8" of course.

I am sharing this because I have been living with this type of speaker for over a year now and I know it could make a lot of people very happy.

Oh, that cutout for the tweeter on the DCM... it's almost EXACTLY the same size as the 3D printed flange for the NX-Bravo.  Imagine an 8" woofer crossed to the NEO tweeter at 1150Hz... and play to a legit 35Hz in room, no need for a sub in most rooms.  That's "High End", simple, and not much "high end money".

Since we're talking about shows and new stuff...sometimes good stuff can be found in a garage instead of a show! Well, at least the stuff I like. :green:

I wasn't referring to sound at shows, but I do have some of Andrew's speakers and I like them too.  They are a 2-way... like the Encore as a matter of fact.  One of them are in the garage.

Danny and Hobbs are hand matching 42 Neo tweeters for my line arrays.  That is the kind of stubborn attention to detail that I wonder if people realize happens.  They are so busy because they want things to be so right too.

Sometimes stubborn is good... sometimes stubborn is bad.  Until then, I will beat my drum on my little "secret"... I know a lot of people just watch from the stands and it may help them too.

Really interested to hear how your line arrays turn  out, please keep us posted. Thanks and cheers.  :thumb:
