Pro-Ject Phono Box RS - Repair or move on??
« on: 13 Mar 2025, 10:29 pm »
About a year ago I purchase a Phono Box RS Balanced MM/MC Phono Preamp powered by the Power Box Phono power supply on another used equipment site. It started acting up and Pro-Ject's techs were unable to do anything for me. They were simply going to replace the Phono Box RS' board because it was the problem. They don't have replacement any longer so they sent it back to me. It sounds like a relay is not switching properly and shutting the power off after a few seconds.

I don't want to throw good money at a problem that can be more costly than a nice replacement. What are your thoughts?

No chance of a trade in/upgrade for a MKii?
That said there's a reason there's an upgraded model.

I don't know what the rest of your system looks like but maybe it's time for an upgrade?
I'm really bad but when stuff breaks I usually see it as a sign from the gods.

I have been content with better vintage gear for years. When we decided to convert a bedroom into a dedicated listening room about 2 years ago, I started building a hi end system. Initially I still had the vintage mentality while buying gear, also saving some money. That approach has not been very successful and the Pro-Ject could be the final straw.

The phono stage is my weak link now. While the Pro-Ject was out for repair, I got a Jolida JD9 that is quite good but doesn't have balanced outputs to connect to my Classe CP-65.

I am open to options.

If you have an EE friend that can take a look at it to see if the board can be repaired.  Otherwise, time to move on.
