Joey DeFrancesco w/Jimmy Smith - Legacy

I played this one a ton at HE2005...got sick of all the other CDs I was demoing, but not this one.  It gets better and better with each listen, and its' now one of my "deserted island" discs.   This is the last recording of the great Jimmy Smith before he died, and it's one of his best performances as well as being a symbolic "passing of the torch" to a younger generation of Hammond jazz organ players like Joey DeFrancesco.

I have very little jazz organ music.  But Jimmy Smith is in my collection, as well as one album featuring Joey DeFrancesco.  That one is "After The Rain", John McLaughlin's tribute album to Coltrane.  John McLaughlin put together a trio for the album, featuring Joey D and Elvin Jones!  I love it.

For Joey DeFrancesco fans I'd recommend getting a cd called Relentless that was done with Danny Gatton around '94 or so.   I think this was the last studio album Gatton did before his suicide.  Two masters of their respective instruments going at it.

Hi Phil,

I picked this disk up after hearing it in your room. Yes, it's very nice. Too bad this disk couldn't have been recorded 10 years ago, when Jimmy was in better physical shape. He would have given Joey a better competition with the organ pyrotechnics.

Still, it's very tasty - I especially like the last 2 songs on the album.

Enjoy,
Bob

If you like Joey DeFrancesco, this is a superb recording with Jimmy bruno.  they both really push each other and there is some stunning music on this disc.

Thanks a lot, I have most of Joey's stuff, but wasn't familiar with this one and now I'm going to pursue more Jimmy Bruno also.

Good stuff  :D
