Using all 6 power amps in the Panny SA-XR70?
« on: 19 May 2005, 07:58 am »
I've just bought this fascinating receiver. My plan was to use it as a 6-channel amplifier for a three-way stereo system, feeding it from the Behringer DCX2496 digital X-over.

It seems, though, like only 5 of the 6 amplified channels are accessible through the analog (DVD-audio) inputs. That is, there is no input for the "surround back"-channel.

The specifications describes this as "6-channel discrete input" but the subwoofer input, I suppose, is not connected to a power stage.

Any ideas how to modify or set up this hi-tech piece of electronic so I can pursue my goal?

Thank you
Boye

I don't think there's any way around the fact that only 5 channels are available for active crossover input. The JVC F10 is the same way. I bought two of them.

You can jump the 3 stereo digitized signals form the output of the dacs to the input of the equibit modulators. With this you bypass all the internal processing, but you still have the 14dB analog volume control.
Been there done that..

I was about to post that bypassing the processing and patching the A/D through to the outputs would be the way to do it, but I didn't realize someone had actually done it. Very cool.

csero - did you just patch through to the modulator inputs on the amp board, or did you patch into the processor board somewhere? I want to replicate the front mains to the surround channels without the party-mode delay, and patching the I2S lines would seem to be the easy way. I could do it at the modulator, but I was wondering whether there was easy access to them somewhere prior to that, maybe avoiding noise pickup.  (yeah, I know - I should get a service manual).

Of course, I'm using an XR25, so the layout may be completly different.

I've patched on the processor board, it is easier to do that. It is also easy to duplicate the fron to the surround, but you also have to modify the muting.

Very impressive. I love the idea, but sounds complicated. How complicated is it?

If you not afraid of soldering SMD, then you only have to desolder 3 SMD resistors, and install 3 jumer wires.

I just bought the Pioneer 1014 receiver for $350 delivered and I'm told it has 7 channel pass through at 110 watts each.  I'm using it solely as an amplifier for now.

Well, csero - you certainly makes it sound rather uncomplicated - as well as tempting. Still, it would be much more so, if I knew how to do it.

Might I ask you to describe the operation? - A fool-proof step by step guide thoroughly illustrated with detailed photos is all I'm asking. OK - maybe just one photo showing the SMD's to desolder and where to connect the jumper wires.

I hope this won't be too hard a challenge for my soldering skills. But I am willing to give it a try.
