The END of the ART DI/O
« on: 18 May 2005, 06:07 pm »
I received a phone call today from Erik Anderson of Full Compass. He has been a very good supplier for folks wanting to purchase the ART DI/O at a good price.

He just got word that ART is no longer going to make the DI/O.

He had four on hand and ART had 2. That is it.

He did say that the higher ups at Full Compass were going to see if they could get ART to make one more run. He was not sure if that was going to happen. He will not find out any more for about a week.

The ART DI/O was and is a very good sounding D/A converter. The smART and MENSA level mods take it a level that is very hard to beat for the price.

ART has no plans to produce another D/A converter.

Still very happy with my Mensa, and disinterested in replacing it - thanks for the great work Wayne.

I know this is an old thread but the DI/O still lives on in the Applied Research & Technology catalogue. The DIO preamp, though, has been discontinued....maybe there is some more life to the DI/O   :)

Bon débarras to one of the sorriest dacs that I have ever owned.  Way overhyped.

Well, to be honest, stock.  Except I did get another power supply for it.  Perhaps my expectations were just too high for this unit.  Even stock there was much hype when it first started making press waves.   At the time I had a Bel Canto Dac-1, a Jolida JD-100 that I had recently purchased and, a dcs Elgar/Purcell rig (my main rig).  Against the Bel Canto and Jolida the Art was a disappointment.  Dynamics were reasonable but, the general sound character was bland, lacking depth and emotion, and with a certain tinny (hi-fi'ish) sound in the treble area.  It just was not my cup of tea.  All three dacs paled in comparison to the dcs rig which remains my reference.

Perhaps when modified the Art takes on a whole new character and sonic perspective.  I thought about getting mine modified but, only one place was offering a mod at the time and, the cost was going to start increasing to the  point of being competitive with the Jolida which was already making imminently musical tunes in my house.  Therefore I saw no reason to spend more money on it.  I purchased the Art DI/O based on the hype at the time which proclaimed it to be a killer dac at a dirt cheap price.  Dirt cheap it was, killer it wasn't.

For those with the patience and wherewithall to get the Art modified and tweaked, I am glad it worked out for you.

I still have a bolder modded Art DI/O if anyone is interested in it. Sounds great, just not using it right now.
