I assembled a pair of GR Research Paradox Ones about 20 years ago and Love them. I still can't get over how great they sound! I am currently getting a pair of XLS Encores built by Mike Lundy with Padauk Wood Cabinets and this prompted me to watch the videos of Danny Building them. When I got to the Poly Fill section, I had a WTF Moment!

A couple questions:

1.) When I assembled the Paradox Ones, I used a product called Black Hole 5 that Danny was recommending. I was wondering if either Product was superior? (Black Hole 5 or No Rez).

2.) The WTF moment came when I was watching the Poly Fill segment. When I lined my Paradox Ones with Black Hole 5, I had thought that was the replacement for Poly Fill, hence I never put any Poly Fill in my Paradox Ones.  Should I open them up now, and stuff the Poly Fill inside as Danny described in the Video?  How might that affect the Sound?

The development of No Rez came from early use of Blackhole 5.

Blackhole 5 was great and damping resonances, but sometimes I felt like it muffled up the mid-range. This was typically when it was completely lined with Blackhole 5. The suspended barrier layer was the cause.

When I first started developing No Rez (what I ended up calling it), I tried a ton of variations including lead layers, and different damping materials. Anytime a heavy barrier layer was used I got a more muffled vocal region. Pulling it out opened up the vocals, but bass levels were not as clear. I finally settled on a damper that was nearly twice as thick as the one used in Blackhole 5, but no barrier. That yielded the best sound.

You might want to try a little light polyfill or fiberglass insulation and hear what happens. There is no right or wrong answer.

OK, Thanks for your reply!  --- Since the Paradox Ones sound so good, I think I'll leave them alone for now. Until at least I get my XLS Encores this Spring. After I listen to them, I'll decide if the Paradox Ones need an 'upgrade'.....

Sounds like a plan.
