ACI Titan II LE and the Force are on my short list for a sub or subs.

Why have I found so much praise for ACI subs on other forums but practically nothing here or at H/D?

Any ACI users out there?

I had been interested in ACI subs too.  They are really nicely finished from their pictures and many attest to their sound but most people have only compared to commercial offerings, much like those hear for other vendors have done.   Many here have VMPS or adire subs or have built their own.  I have an Adire Rava sub, works good for my applications, but I need to treat my room a bit more for better performance.

Captain:

There were a number of Titan owner's comments in this thread a few months ago:

I have a Titan 1.  I listened to all the major sub brands.  At least 15.  Titan can't be beat.  Transparent integration for one.  You will find yourself turning it off to see if it is on.   Musical for two.  No boominess. Three, it also ramps up fast.  When you are watching a movie and something explodes the transparent Titan suddenly rocks the house.

Might I suggest that a good test when sub shopping is acoustic bass.  Dave Young's 2x2 sessions are excellent sub audition material.  You will hear way more bass detail with the Titan than with most other subs.

If you rattle the bumpers off of your car or if you are looking for floor moving, chest pounding bass the Titan is not for you.  Its a musical instrument.  Anyone can pound the floor with exessive wattage and decibels.  Now to make bass into music...that is another story.

I have the Titan II LE, it is a very nice sub that mates well with my Magnepan 3.6's. Lots of Maggie users use the Titan and is often compared to Rel sub. The only complaint is that knobs are cheap and cheesy and the cord is an attached lamp cord, wish I could use one of my beefier power cord. Anyone know if its easy/difficult to modify?

KKM,

You can always replace knobs with homebrew ones.  One of these DIY audio sites had a DIY project where the owner replaced his integrated's knobs with homemade wood ones to control static from touching.  They look nice and would work well.  The lamp cord can be replaced via soldering or installing an IEC plug.  Shouldn't be hard if you aren't afraid of opening it up.

I have owned the ACI Titan II Le (oak) for approximately two months and love everything about it.  I use it to augment my Martin Logan Aerius i's and find it does a superb job once I finally adjusted everything to my satisfaction.  Initially I used the ACI 65hz filters, but decided my system sounded better running the Aerius i's full range.  Like most others, I auditioned many store brand subs in the $1k to $2k range before my purchase and felt the ACI Titan mated best with my system.  With a liberal 30 day return policy you can't go wrong.  Good luck with your subwoofer search, whichever brand you may choose in the end.

By the way, the support and help from ACI is fast and top notch.

I read somewhere about someone replacing the stock power cord on a Titan. If I remember, Mike D even gave them permission to modify it without voiding the warranty. I'd sure check with Mike before I modified anything, just to be sure :D

I've got a pair of Force on the way. I found that my Sapphires needed MANY hours to really open up and do their thing. I'm planning on hooking up the Force, doing some listening, then let em rip for about 100 hours before I come back to really check em out.

A couple of points of clarification:

The power cords for the Titan and Force amps are hard wired into the power supply. I have given individuals permission to modify either by replacing the cord or replacing with an IEC socket. If this is done, it is very important to make sure to get a good seal with no air leaks.

The knobs on the pot are quite small. The problem is, they're the ones that come pre-installed on the ALPS pots that we use. And the ALPS pots are very good components. The Titan series has been out for around nine years and I can't remember hearing once of a scratchy, noisy pot. I'd like to make the point that the whole amplifier module is of extremely high quality. This U.S. custom built amplifier is extremely well made and has proven to be very reliable and durable.

Gentlemen, I appreciate your responses.
Mike, I'll give you a shout sometime next week to discuss the pros and cons of using a single Titan vs. a pair of Force subs in my application.
Regards,
Jeff
