Got a MG10 QR pair to restore
« on: 28 Nov 2024, 06:16 pm »
Hello all,

I recently picked up a set for peanuts that need a little love. Seller says I just need to reglue a few wires.

I did check out the following YouTube series https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXgcQoq1BGo but I'm not sure I need to completely rewire everything...

And the whole reason I joined this community is because I found this excellent thread https://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=186214.0 by HAL.

I definitely want to keep the cost low, but I have many questions and am fairly new to HiFi.

Has anybody else tried this model? What's your advice to restore them on the cheap?

Is biamping a good idea or is it advanced?

I see your post has not generated any responses.  Please post your inquiries over at the Planar Speaker Asylum (on the Audio Asylum forum) you will likely get good information there.

If you contact Magnepan, they have rebuild kits available for all their speakers at reasonable cost. The repair kit has instructions on use and the other materials needed that can be sources locally.

If the speakers are working but the woofer wires have delaminated from the mylar diaphragm, then it is what most videos show on YouTube with the glue removal using acetone, alcohol and cotton balls.  You need Super77 spray glue to reattach the wires and the other glue to seal them that comes in the kit.

The wire is aluminum and the quasi ribbon is aluminum foil that is 1 micron thick.  It is part of the repair kit they offer if needed.  Yours may not need the wire and foil.

My MG10/QR's were working correctly, so I did not have to reglue them, just rewire them to the new connectors for direct drive.

Good luck with the repairs.

The aluminium foil is thicker. For tweeters it is mostly 25.4 µm = 0.0254 mm = 0.001 inch.
