BR20 Upsample
« on: 15 Nov 2024, 06:19 pm »

I’ve recently acquired BR20, which I may say has exceeded all my expectations, especially great detail at low volume levels.

I understand it can upsample from the TOSlink inputs, but how does one enable upsampling?

TIA

Shaun

I am not sure the BR-20 offers up-sampling - where did you see that?

Hallo James!

First off I would like to thank you and your team for all the effort you all put in to expedite my order, very much appreciated.

Needless to say I am absolutely delighted with my BHA-1/BR20/4B3 setup.

I’m particularly surprised how much better my Meze Elite headphones sound.

The overall sound quality is comparable to Linn systems costing way more.

Upsampling is mentioned on page 7 of the manual in section 10:

“When the internal DAC is receiving valid
audio signal, the LOCK LED will light green. When optional upsampling is engaged (AES/ EBU, TOSLINK, and S/PDIF inputs only) the Upsampling indicator will light yellow for integer multiples of 44.1kHz and green for integer multiples of 48kHz.”

Many thanks again

Kind regards

Shaun

Agreed, there is the UPS light and the mention of it in the manual being optional but I’ve never found a way of up sampling nor recall it being an option as the HDMI and phono inputs were?

Also agreed, it is one fantastic piece of kit.

BR 20 Owners Manual, Page 7 -

10. Lock / UPS
When the internal DAC is receiving valid
audio signal, the LOCK LED will light green.
When optional upsampling is engaged (AES/
EBU, TOSLINK, and S/PDIF inputs only) the
Upsampling indicator will light yellow for integer
multiples of 44.1kHz and green for integer
multiples of 48kHz.

Not sure how Optional UPS is engaged, though.

See James’ post from 2022.
I’m not sure the BR4 was ever changed to trigger upsampling?

Looking at my BR4 remote I do see a button labeled “Phase”

What does that do?

Is it good?

Kind regards to all and getting very excited about OS3

I own the BDA-3 which has upsampling, but the fact that the BR-20 does not should be of no concern as upsampling is not needed. Everything I have played on the BDA-3 that was upsampled sounded worse than played in its native sampling rate. In fact, if I had to guess I believe upsampling was added to the BDA-3 just the give owners the option to experiment with upsampling.

I wonder what would happen if you have a BR2 remote and press the upsample button. Would the BR20 react?  If so then it’s just a matter of programming a learning remote with the right code. Bryston should also be able to tell you the code or just borrow the remote from your dealer and clone it.

I also use the BDA-3. Also never use the upsampling.

If you look here the button applicability is highlighted for the older preamps (BP26, BP17, etc)

http://support.bryston.com/downloads/Remotes/BR4%20Owner's%20Manual%2009022020.pdf

Usually in the context of a preamp or dac it is a 180 degree absolute phase control, which never made sense to me because music is an AC signal. With the BR20 (BP18 in the document) the button is assigned to one of the transport controls, so can’t be related to phase.

Right on the front panel there is a UPS led right next to the LOCK led. Does it light up by default or not? Is there a menu option for it?
