Recommendations for solo cello albums?
« on: 13 Nov 2024, 09:05 pm »
I'm on a János Starker kick lately and would love any recommendations of contemporary artists with the same playing style. And any other cello solo albums you would recommend.

Thanks!

Welcome to AudioCircle, ThatNorthernSound!

I added János Starker to my fav artists on Qobuz so I can check out his repertoire.

I don't really follow any particular cellists, so I'm looking forward to learning something, and following this thread so I hope it takes off.  :thumb:

Check out Rufus Cappadocia - Songs for Cello. This is the best Cello music I have ever heard.

Alisa Weilerstein is a modern cellist who brings incredible intensity to everything she records.

Janos Starker is great, but for my money no one beats Anner Bylsma!  Check him out.

There are many great recordings that memorialize his life.

I saw Yo-Yo Ma at the Portsmouth Music Hall a year or so ago, and I have several of his recordings. He is a gift to humanity in a sublime, joyous way. I also have a recording of Rostropovich Bach Cello Suites that sends me into the cosmos when I want to travel, but the younger players, don't have names on my immediate radar I'm afraid.

Jacqueline du Pré popped into my head just now too, all because of this thread-- Alisa Wellerstein is mentioned and I just saw an ad for an upcoming performance and I recognized her name! And, of course, Pablo Casals.......

"All Things Considered" has an interview with Yo-Yo Ma and John Williams, they talk about this album, their 40 year friendship and John's recent 90th birthday:

On the early greats there is Pablo Cassals and the amazing conductor, composer and musician Jordi Savall on Viola da Gamba.
