Khartago Mono Has Gone (mostly) Silent
« on: 7 Nov 2024, 07:42 pm »
One of my Khartagos is malfunctioning. I've tried different sources, cables, etc. to no avail. There is only the slightest amount of signal coming from the amp. When I isolate that channel and turn up the volume, the signal slightly increases to a barely audible point and with a hint of distortion. No abuse, damage, or power surge that i know of. They are plugged into a quality surge protector AC line filter/155 joule surge protector.

They are a few years old and purchased new. Has anyone experienced this or have suggestions on how to fix it? Would be nice to not have to ship back to Klaus.

Your best bet is to call Klaus. Make sure it is after 10pm his time, he is a night owl. Sorry about your amp problem. Probably not what you wanted to read, but it is the safest option.

Good luck,
JCarney

Yes, as JCarney suggested call Klaus late.  He is in Indianapolis, IN. He can be difficult to reach, so in mean time,  have you tried swapping channels on your pre amp?
Maybe open case and just do a basic integreity check, loose connection, obviously burned or swelled component. Power off of course!
Keep us posted.

Klaus didn't know what it could be.

I took the cover off to look for bad caps, etc. Saw nothing. Left it on for a while and noticed that one of the heatsinks was cool while the other was warm. I'm not kidding when I say I tapped on the heatsink a couple times with my knuckles and the music came back. Amps have been on for about a month and no issues.

Knowing little about amp internals, I'd love to know what bad solder joint/connection would cause this behavior. Any ideas?

Yes...could be....could also be that a part starts failing...how old are the amps ///what's the S/N's ???

Cold solder joints don't just appear over time though......contact issues  ???  especially on the RCA's ???

call me

At this point I can only guess.......again,  with well over 10,000 amp shipments I've seen pretty much all....one similar thing from years back that I remember :  box was dropped big time.  Inertia cracked a solder connection at the pre-drivers,  as the internal heatsink must have moved in some way....cracked a leg of the predriver or something of that nature....5 minute job,  done.

Again:
Cold solder not so much as the amp has been running for a couple of years...could also be that a single part simply decides to act up.......happens,  unfortunately,  regardless of quality.

Again,  call me, but before sending anything back open up the top cover and check all of the cables from the board to the connectors...wiggle them and see that they're solidly connected.

And oh yeah ........TURN OFF THE AMP FIRST  !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  (legal disclaimer)
