Getting more into speaker building. Currently working on two Paul Carmody kits, Overnight Sensation and Amiga. I'm trying out some better caps and better hook up wire. I ordered some Obbligato caps for my second set of OS's, they are supposed to be high end at a low price. They're coming in from the Philippines, I want to see if they sound better that the stock Dayton caps. Got some Audyn Plus caps coming in for the Amigas and wondering about bypass caps. Also interested in room treatment and measuring speakers using REW. I have a Topping LA-90 Discreet running in stereo and and RME ADI-2 DAC (I think the most adjustable DAC one can buy) which I currently send music to through USB from my Macbook. Furutech is now my cable brand and I like low mass connector like GR Research tube connectors, KLE and Furutech 867 binding posts; Audioquest BFA or Furutech bananas(not low mass but locking). I want to build and entire speaker from Baltic Birch, maybe another Paul Carmody design - I'm liking the Virage (tower version), but for now I'm having fun working on what I have. Also, I'm 65 and have hearing aids, so that's another link in the listening chain that I'm always messing with, I'd love to know what other hearing aid wearers do.

These are some wood recommendations from DIYers:
Baltic Birch: soft and warm sound.
MDF: detailed and bright.
Particle Board: neutral, mid on BB/MDF.

I would suggest MDF or HDF 30mm in the baffle and other sides use BB 20 or 30mm.
On base wall need to be double 50 or 60mm.

Thanks for the welcome, looking forward to exploring the site. I'm getting ready to veneer my Amigas, I will upload some photos of the project. I have a chemical sensitivity and MDF makes me pretty ill. My first project was the Overnight Sensations kits from Parts Express which is really nicely made Baltic Birch. However the Amiga kit is MDF and I had to coat all the pieces with a polyurethane paint to block the smell before I could work with it. As you'll see from the photos, I used clear poly but then switched to some cabinet paint I was using to refinish my kitchen cabinets. Regular paint soaks into the MDF and makes it swell - gotta use a polyurethane. So that's why I want to use BB for my next project. I'm going to try cutting it myself and doing the router work. I bought a 1/4 " router which I need for the veneering, but haven't learned to use it yet. Like I said, I'll put some photos in my next post. I need to get my first three posts approved so I can search the site!
