WTB - Good sounding Dynamic speakers
« on: 7 Oct 2024, 02:30 am »
I am looking for a pair of dynamic, not OB, planar or electrostatic speakers which will compare favorably to a pair of Magnepan .7s.

I have set up a 2 channel listening area and have tried various speakers I currently own against a pair of Magnepan .7s So far the dynamic speakers I have tried KEF 103/4, AV123 X-SLS, Mirage OM 260 do not have anything close to the presence or complete sound of the .7s.

I have come close with other planar/OB speakers, for example Carver ALS Platinums, these actually have some attributes which are better and over all I consider a tie. Also the Eminent Technology LFT 8Bs which seem a little clearer in the mids & highs but the .7s are more coherent.

I have a maximum budget of $600, which will make it tough. Also they need to be located anywhere south of Orlando/Tampa Florida.

Yes, I know I am looking for a unicorn, but one can hope.

Dynamics has more to do with your electronics, but speakers also play a role.  I am a long time Maggie owner, and they did not really come alive until I moved on from a Parasound A21 amp to a Pass Labs X250.  They have similar power ratings, but the Pass has more capacitance and is more dynamic.  My BAT preamp also is very dynamic.  More so than the Pass X1 preamp I had and sold.

For speakers, consider B&W, Monitor Audio, Elac.  Subwoofers will help.  I run dual subs with my 1.6QR's and it made a huge difference in presence, dynamics and sound stage.

If you can find a good pair of Joseph RM25si or XL they are dynamic, balanced and transparent, reminiscent of good planars on a smaller scale. Often $5-800 used. A great bargain at that.

It is my considered opinion that a box speaker cannot provide the musical landscape realized with Magnepan, especially at your price point.

If your room is not too large, I would consider a pair of Totem Arro. Despite their size, and properly placed, the Arro provide fulfilling, tight, and although not powerful, bass that goes into the 40hz range, throw a big soundstage and image very well. You should be able to find a pair in the $600 range if you are patient.

Agree 100%.  There are no box speakers at that price point that will compare to the Magnepan 0.7's. However, you need a good powerful amp with high current and capacitance to really bring them alive.  Adding a decent sealed sub or two will help as well.

I would look for a used pair of Monitor Audio Silver bookshelfs for that price.  MA makes speakers with good dynamics.  I own 2 pair of older Silver's in addition to the 2 pair of Maggies that I own.
