Speaker cable
« on: 6 Oct 2024, 06:54 pm »
I am new to Audio Circle.
Looking for advice on speaker cable at a reasonable price point.
Have come across different opinions regarding connectors.  In particular I wonder what the Circle thinks of gold plated brass spades and bananas.
Thanks
MP

Welcome
Try to use copper conductors as much as possible. Brass is second best, and the higher the copper content the better. Other metals like cast zinc and plated steel are not really suitable for audiophile use. The lowest price gold plated pure copper banana speaker connectors I have found are Electra Tube Connectors, sold in US by GR Research. See their Circle here, or their website

The Electra tube connectors are very good. Also look at KLE banana which are a super low mass design if that's more your thing. Both are easy to solder and sound great.

Gold plating is more important in low voltage, low current connections. Like phono cartridge cables and line level interconnects.
But Gold plating is fragile, so not a great idea in high voltage, high current connections.

First off, welcome to AC.  A decent starting point is the Micca speaker cable available at Amazon. 14 gauge, gold plated bananas.... available in either 6' or 12' pairs. Priced at roughly $25 or $40 depending on which length you choose. This cable gets a very favorable recommendation from Steve Huff on his YT podcast. Being that it's an Amazon purchase, you have a built-in audition period with return option.

Give Anti Cables a try. I and many friends have been impressed with them. They won't break the bank. Buy USED, for what you would pay new, you can move up their line of Speaker cables.
Their entry Speaker Cable replaced my TOL Monster Sigma Speaker Cables on my Vandy Signature lll speakers 12 years ago.

What do you think of Silversmith cables?

Never heard of them. Copper? Silver? A blend?  Using them on Tube gear? Solid State? Hybrid?

i much prefer banana connectors. a relatively inexpensive brand i can recommend is Luminous. i also have some Cardas. not long ago i A-B'd cardas clears (which i own) with their parsec and couldn't hear a difference... and the parsec are a lot cheaper. i've had good luck with lower priced Kimber cables too.

When it comes to the wire part of loudspeaker cables, all that really matters is the total end-to-end resistance of the cable. Long thin cables might sound different than short thick cables.
    But connectors!
Well connectors are a different ballgame.
Three important factors in speaker cables are length, thickness and loudspeaker model.

I would recommend DIY your own speaker cable with magnet wire or buy CAT 5 Ethernet, but most audiophiles wish own a fancy brand with exotic reviews on magazines.

+1 on copper. In my experience with QED and a famous audiophile US brand the silver plated cables are not silver, probably aluminum or lead.
