BIB
« on: 1 Oct 2024, 09:42 pm »
Hi, I am new here and interested in single driver speakers.
I built a BIB many years ago and used the standard cabiet size for the Radio Shack 40-1354.
I have had several different drivers in them. I built a baffle for each of the drivers so I can change out the different speakers I want to use in the BIB.
I have used Radio Shack 40-1354, Radio Shack 40-1197, Alpair 7.3, Fostex F120A, and Tang Band W5-1879.
All sounded good or pretty good, but after DSP adjustment the Tang Band W4-1879 have sounded really the best to me. Good bass, great midrange and acceptable highs.
Just wanted to tell how I messed around with the BIB design. They are a good cabinet design.

I wanted to add that the DSP I added to the Tang Band W4-1879 BIB was just to boost the lows and surprisingly lower the highs. The highs had a shrillness that got to me, couldn't listen to it for long. I boosted the lows at 750hz and below by 7.5db. lowered the highs by -3db at 6000hz and up. That did the trick and balanced the speakers out.
There is just a blend of all the instruments and voice or voices that all come together. Every once in a while there will be a song that almost starts to overpower the bass but it is just on the edge but never distorts, but you might think it will but doesn't. May have to bring down the lows to 6db.
These speakers and cabinets just keeps amazing me with the music coming out of them. Everything just blends together and sounds right with supprisingly good bass. And to my ears the highs are just fine.
Just thought I would throw this observation in.

Also would be useful consider the Frugal Horn for 6'' or 8'' fullranges with low Qts.

I like the Frugal Horn also and thought about building it. I also thought about the Woden horn. I've heard go things about both of them.

Hey!

   Welcome to Audio Circle Kenny.
My speakers are also based on BIB design with 6" Fostex FE167E, inspired by Cain & Cain BIB that I slapped together with birch plywood sheets from Home Depot. They are meant to be just an experiment in single driver speaker for me after I've heard a proper pair at the audio show, which I was so taken by the sound specially in the mid band.
Well, that was back in 2002 and 22 years later I'm still using them in my system. I don't use any DSP in my system though. I do have Fostex FT17H super tweeters with a single cap come in very high to fill up the top a bit. Driven by an all tube system here with SET amps here. I listen to a lot of female singers so this suits me well.
Anyway, good to see another single driver users here and with BIB also.

I did the same thing. Used birch plywood sheets from Home Depot. I do have a pair of ported cabinets I built out of baltic birch for a pair of Altec (GPA) 416-8Cs. I built the BIBs around 10 years ago.

I now have the Altec's in A7 828 cabinets. Bought the cabinets from a guy in Plano, Texas that he stored in original boxes that he had never used and never had any drivers in them. I used many horns on top of them with many different drivers. Right now I am using 9 cell multicell horns that were made on a CNC machine. I bought them from a guy in Germany. They were made for 4 inch speakers, but I also had him make me some extensions for 1 inch drivers. I have JBL L175 drivers on them for now. The whole setup sounds good.

I often use tube equipment on my speakers.
