Long-time audiophile with a moderate budget
« on: 22 Sep 2024, 07:26 pm »
Hello there.

I've been interested in audio gear since 1969. I've built a lot of systems over the years, always at a moderate price.

My current system includes Wharfedale Diamond 225 speakers on 29 inch barstools; a Schiit Aegir (OG) amplifier; a Schiit Saga+ preamp with a vintage 6SN7GT tube;
a Technics SL-1200Mk7 turntable with a Nagaoka MP-200 cartridge, Jelco HS-25 headshell, and Herbies mat; a Sota Pyxi phono preamp; also a Rega Planar 2 turntable with a Nagaoka MP-110 cartridge and a Schiit Mani 2 phono preamp; a WiiM Pro Plus streamer; a Denafrips Ares II DAC; Mogami 2549 interconnects; BJC Ten White speaker cables.

The Wharfedale Diamond 225 speakers give me the clear midrange that I've sought for many years. They are a bargain at $299/pair.

I prefer vinyl records to digital, but I like the fact that streaming allows me to listen to a variety of music I don't have on vinyl.

Welcome aboard!
I’m curious, what tube you’re running in the Saga?  How is it different than the stock tube?

Welcome! Your path is not too dissimilar from my own. I've stayed high-end but affordable by largely buying highly-regarded but pre-owned gear.
You mentioned your preference for vinyl; I share that, but I found a huge improvement from my previous digital front-end (a NAD M50.2 server/player running Roon from a NUC) when I switched to a Pachanko Constellation Mini SE also running Roon (no longer needing the NUC). If you look at the Pachanko Constellation comments and reviews online (particularly at WhatsBestForum.com, where there are several owners), you'll see it comparing favorably with other options running up to nearly 10x the cost. I found a demo Constellation Mini SE with the Stellar power supply for under $4k. I still prefer vinyl to streaming, but digital files stored internally in the Pachanko sound incredible and certainly give vinyl a run for the money while adding the obvious convenience.

Welcome.  Nice gear.   I am a Nagaoka fan as well.  I own an MP-200 and my son has the MP-150.  Great sounding cartridges.

I'm glad you asked about Saga+ tubes, since I've rolled quite a few of them and wish to share my impressions. I'll begin with a cut and paste from my post to the Cheap and Cheerful circle:

<

I own two Saga+ preamps. I think they are exceptional if you choose the right tube. I've tried dozens, not including the Linlai. My favorites are two vintage 6SN7GT tubes with flat, staggered plates: The Ken Rad (later GE) from 1944 to 1947, and the Sylvania from 1951 and 1952. The Sylvania was also marketed under a number of brand names, but it usually has the Sylvania manufacturer code, 312.

The Ken Rad (GE) and Sylvania tubes can be found on ebay. The Sylvanias are sometimes quite a bargain (around $30). It's important to check for balanced, high measurements, around 100/100 on a TV-7 tester or 2800/2800 (or so) on a Hickok tester.

Maybe you'd like to try a Ken Rad or Sylvania in your Saga+.

>

Right now I have the Sylvania tubes in both of my Saga+ preamps. [The second one is in my bedroom setup, where I also use the Wharfedale Diamond 225 speakers.] But I swap in the Ken Rads periodically.

Both the Sylvanias and the Ken Rads are clear and lively, with no graininess or other typical tube imperfections. The OG tubes I've tried are the JJ and the (new production) Tung Sol. I have the 6N8S and haven't felt it was worth trying. The JJ completely lacks character. The Tung Sol is warm, but not very clear, and it's grainy.

If you can find a Sylvania or Ken Rad like I've described for a good price, get it. I am confident that you will think it's a big improvement.

Best wishes!

You're welcome. If you try one of the tubes I mentioned, please tell me your impressions with a comment on this thread. Cheers!
