Has anyone here done Magnepan's X modification?

As the title says, has anyone taken them up on that program?
I've only seen one thing where someone listened to a regular model and then the X version.
The verdict was the two speakers sounded different from one another but one wasn't preferred, just the sound was different.

I did a DIY version for my LRS.

Here is my DIY version for the MG-III that upgraded the cross over caps, eliminated the external crossover box, and made a more rigid connection to the base. Not shown are lead bricks on the base and the top of the panel.

The Magnepan design and construction invites modification. However, based on what I have learned, the X modifications go way beyond simple crossover upgrades. In fact, I'm taking a hard look at the 20.7x.

Hello
I am one of the suckers to have purchased an X model from Magnepan :) The .7x to be exact. I am new to the Magnepan world so I started off with the LRS+ about 3 months ago. I did have concerns which were born from forum opinions and demoing a set of Magnepan 1.7 at a dealer a few years ago. The dealer demo was not good flat and lifeless and I would blame the associated equipment and room. I recently heard a few Maggies at an owner's home and I was very impressed. He had .7 and 20.7 in his system.

My 2 biggest concerns were that the LRS+ would not sound good at lower listening levels (65-75db) and I would need a million watt amp to power them. Well, none of these concerns turned out true for me. Maybe if you have different sound pressure requirements (80db or higher) my comments might need to be taken with a grain of salt.

Any case powering the LRS+ with Cary SLI80HS KT88 integrated tube amp and having enough room to breath, I was understanding what the hype was about with the LRS's. They give you this incredible detailed wall of sound for just a $1000. I was so satisfied with the engaging sound of the LRS+ that I was intrigued to try the .7x. I purchased it with option to return either one or both if not satisfied.  A Win/win scenario.

When receiving the .7x (took 3 weeks to ship) I went through a up and down break-in period, which was challenging. The LRS+ was not so up and down and sounded great from the start. So with a mostly broken in .7x speaker, I am hearing a MUCH improved speaker over the LRS+ to my ears. Larger sound, more refined detail top to bottom and better tonal balance overall. Is it worth $3000 more? Absolutely! Either way the LRS+ is still a great speaker and if I never heard the .7x, I would be very happy keeping the LRS+ in my system.

I also want to add, I love the way Magnepan speakers sound like ONE driver...really spectacular!

P.S
I can't say if the X upgrade is worth $2000 for existing .7 owners, but what I can say is the .7x is worth its asking price and then some. Just my take in my room with my equipment and my ears etc. :)

Thanks for the review, it's good to hear something positive about their newer speakers.
There's not much information out about them.

If they sold the upgrade as a kit I may try it , but I don't think it's worth $2000.00 plus shipping.
