Bully setup question
« on: 3 Sep 2024, 12:09 pm »
Hello everyone,
I'm still interested in the Bully's for my application. Hoping to order by Christmas if the parts are all available?
I'm trying to wrap my head around how to best set-up and configure these in my system.
I currently have a 7.3.6 system. If I only used my system for home theater I would probably just keep what I have, but, I love 2-channel stereo. So, I want it to really excel for music listening.
The Bully's will replace my main front left and right Klipsch RP8000f's (which by the way are crossover modified :D).
My (3) sub's are all time aligned with a miniDSP 2x4 HD. With this in mind, my preamp/processor, which is a Anthem AVM70 sees the (3) subs as one for calibration. I'm guessing I will still need my current (3) subs to compliment my remaining (11) speakers? So, with my AVM70, do I run the Bully's as Large, as to not get any help from my current (3) subs?
Should I hook these up with normal speaker level wire and short jumper to the Rythmik amp?
If someone could please briefly explain how to best hook these up and configure in a system like mine I appreciate it.
Sorry, I'm confused when I try to think about how to do it?
Maybe Danny or Hobbs could chime in please?
Thanks,
Tom

I’d try to use the mains output (set to large) from the preamp to the Rythmik amps. I’m under the impression that you’re better off using the line level inputs of the Rythmik amps. But the other way would work too as long as the sub is receiving the full range signal it will work.

You would need an RCA splitter of some kind if your preamp has just one pair of R/L mains output.

Does your Rythmik amps have LFE AND Line/High Level inputs? Do you have a separate preamp or use the Anthem as your preamp for stereo?

The Anthem AVM70 has a lot of adjustments, start re-calibration with the Brutes as large.

Typically surround processors are used for video and movies so during calibration, even though the main speakers are set to "large," the software will start rolling off bass at 80 Hz ("small" will roll off the bass higher, maybe 120 Hz) and send all bass (16 speakers in your case) to the subs. This is by design so the speaker that needs the most power is the sub which has it's own power supply and the home theater receiver (which most people buy) doesn't have to reproduce any bass below 80 Hz.

Not many people own main speakers that can take the full brunt of movie soundtracks, 20 Hz at 90dB will destroy most main speakers. If the Brutes can handle it then the Anthem ARC Genesis software will allow it.

My main speakers are -3dB at 34Hz. I adjust the Anthem AVM60 ARC Genesis software bass rolloff to 40Hz, that way the woofers don't flutter uncontrollably at the beginning of "Blade Runner 2049." The movie soundtrack is just as devastating as the Blu-ray. You can even set the front main speakers to flat after calibration if you dare.

My setup uses a separate stereo preamp for the L&R speakers. Calibration is done with the volume set at noon, a preamp with home theater bypass would be ideal but that option is not available from AVA. I fine tune each speaker's volume using pink noise from a Stereophile Test CD and a sound meter because the ARC software is an approximation and not perfect at my seat. The pink noise with meter is a better loudness calibration tool than the test tones generated by the AVM60.

Thanks for the detailed reply, appreciated! I don’t have the Bully’s yet, just trying to better understand so when I do get them I’m not totally in the dark.
Thanks,
Tom

Unless you're going to add an integrated amp with HT bypass I would run the L/R Anthem preamp to your Rythmik A370's.  Then run the mains as "Super Sub Fronts" which will run your Bully's full range, and still send the LFE from your mains to your minidsp.  (Edit* - I forgot the the Bully's have the optional tube connector jumpers - this will increase your options so you can run either Anthem preout L/R > Rythmik A370's, or from the your Anthem L/R amps to your Bully's and use the jumpers to feed the Rythmik amps.  I think i've read somewhere in something officially regarding the A370 that Rythmik recommends line inputs but I personally have not tried comparing both options, and instead use the line input in my use case).

Super Sub Fronts https://manuals.anthemav.com/mrx-avm/en/104#/
Full frequency range stereo is fed to the front left and right channels and bass is sent to the subwoofer.  In this case the low frequency information is effectively doubled which may result in unpredictable and colored low frequency reproduction.  This setting is not recommended for accurate sonic reproduction.

I have an Anthem MRX1140 connected to dual Rythmik G25HP's for my HT duty and I use Sub1 and Sub2 outputs directly to those from the Anthem.
I also run my L/R preamp from the Anthem to the HT bypass of the Galion TS120 Tube Integrated Amp.  The TS120 has my NX-Oticas along with dual Rythmik A370's (GR Double Troubles) connected to it - so my NX-Otica's and Double Troubles all have full range running to them with the Anthem being the preamp and Super Sub Fronts enabled. It sounds outrageous for HT like this.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I didn't realize this option. The Anthem processor is truly an amazing processor, which at first you don't realize until you start using it.
Thank you!
