My canvas...thoughts?
« on: 29 Aug 2024, 06:51 pm »
I signed a half a rain forests worth of papers this morning and picked up the key to my new (old) house.   :o

This is the front living space that will eventually be my media room. I'd guess the square footage at 200 or a bit less.  The speakers that I have the most interest in right now (to start) is a pair of X-Statik and an X-Voce.  I do plan to do as much room/wall treatment as needed but I wonder if this space will be big enough for these speakers (subs later maybe)   For now a Denon receiver will be powering everything, but I do want to move to a dedicated component system later.

Congrats!!!

I wouldn't worry about room treatment yet, except for the window which will probably be a first reflection point for the right-sided speaker. Some sound barrier curtains from Amazon will do the trick if the existing ones aren't thick enough. A sliding barn door on the opening in the back of the room would be nice, too, if appropriate. Otherwise, you have some decent space to work with. The room's unique shape should be beneficial.

Measure the width of the back wall and let us know.

Thanks, & will do on the measurement. I'm not so much concerned for the SQ footage, as much as how far into the room the R & L speakers will need to be.  I also think the angled wall is a benefit and as much as I detest fads, I agree a barn-style sliding door would be ideal for that threshold.

Congrats to you and your family on the new house!

The room should work fine. I would setup the system on the side wall with no windows or doors. That way you can pull the statiks out a few feet as they require for open baffle. If you want them positioned closer to front wall then go for closed box speakers.

If you can tolerate the placement a few feet out into the room then X-Statik should work well in there. I thought it might be too much bass for the small room, but the room isn't sealed off and statik has sealed bass so it should match pretty well I think.

You might find that Xstatik makes enough bass without a sub. Because they are sealed they can be boosted a lot, and you have Rx DSP to dial in the boost.

Statik is capable of creating a clear solid center image so you may not need a center channel, especially after you upgrade to separate components which image better than Rx.

Now go mow the lawn and prune the hedges and paint paint paint so you can have time for your new man cave!!

I find that about half the time I use a sub with my X-Statics, and half the time I don't bother.  But it does make a difference.  For classical, a sub is a must.
What part of Tx are you in?  I'm near Abilene.

Congrats on the new house! I would recommend ibuprofen for any carpal tunnel cramping this afternoon. Lol. When I signed mine for some reason they forced signing first, full middle name and last and I thought my arm would fall off by page 30.

As for subs and integration, it really depends on music preferences how much you'll need them but that is a decent size room to pressurize so likely a stereo pair is in your future. If you are looking for any form of rock music, giving scale and impact to classical or are just a bass head, you'll run them constant. Stripped down jazz, chamber orchestra, female vocal/folk stuff it's really dealer's choice.

Does your denon receiver have separate sub outs for L&R or does it sum as a mono signal?

"Does your denon receiver have separate sub outs for L&R or does it sum as a mono signal?"

It's a fairly cheap receiver so more than likely it's a mono.  My music tastes are pretty varied, but I love 70's folk and acoustic (think Simon and Garfunkel, Marshal Tucker Band, Crosby Stills and Nash, Cat Stevens, Jim Croce, etc.) but Rush, Boston, AC/DC, Metallica (and any 80's hair band you can name  :drums:) are all likely to get some time in a listening session of any length.  But as much as I love music, movies are going to be a big part of this room so for that reason alone I want deep, clean, bass.

I used to run a 5.1 HT with pretty good components in my HT.  After moving to OB speakers, I ditched the center and surrounds because 2 channel (plus subs) was actually better than multichannel.

Just something to keep in mind - you might not need a receiver and can spend that money on higher quality 2 channel gear.

Well since I have about a dozen things in this house that I want updated, upgraded or flat out remodeled (coughmasterbathcough) my audio system will happen in stages. I already have the cheapish Denon receiver so I just need to get myself a table saw, router/table and possibly a miter saw.  Then I can start doing what needs doing for the house and then, I'm already equipped to tackle some cabinets. I'm looking forward to learning how to put on wood veneers.  :flame:

And thanks for the tip on the two mains. I'll certainly start with the X-Statik pair and If I feel like I'm happy, it may just be that I don't do a big ole center speaker.  The room is wider that I initially thought (from the POV of the window on the right) so I feel like I have a lot of freedom to really tweak placement.

The minimum load impedance of X-Statiks is about 3.5 ohms at a very busy 300Hz, and your receiver minimum impedance rating is probably 6ohms. Plan on upgrading to a 4 ohm receiver at the same time X-statiks go live, or go real easy on the throttle with this receiver.

What I'm looking at ATM for components are: A Schiit Bifrost 2 DAC, and a pair of Topping B200 monoblocs.  I haven't given a ton of thought to a pre-amp. I may keep the system all solid state or I may do something with glowy bits.

Congratulations on your new home, take your time in sorting things out no hurry. I only just moved into my new house too, been in about 3 months now.
I want to treat my room properly, so I am going to take my time as  good room treatment is not cheap. At the moment, I am using the cheaper room treatment I had in my old flat.
Good luck in your new home, I hope you enjoy the journey of gradually building up your house and room as much as I am.

This is what my room looks like at the moment.
