Bryston 4B-ST#2
« on: 9 Aug 2024, 06:32 pm »
Hello. I'm wondering about buying a Bryston 4B-ST that has had only 1 owner since it was new. As I understand, it has been on "service" before, but as far as I can understand, capacitors etc. have never been replaced. Can I expect the sound quality to have degraded over the years? And what can I expect to have to do in terms of work on this in order for it to be 100% again? Can I expect to replace the tranistors as well?
Best Regards, Geir Tommy, Norway  :)

I had a 4B-ST many, many years ago and I cannot recall if there was a build date on the back or only a serial number. If your unit has a serial number you can email Bryston for the build date. If there is the build date it will look something like this 02/24. The first number is the year it was built and the 2nd number is the week of that year so in my example it would be the 24th week of 2002.

Can you find out either of these 2 numbers? There are likely still many if these amps out there making great music and I believe would work well with your speakers mentioned in your other thread

Yes - there is a build date - it's a 4 digit code.  The first two digits are the year and the second two are the week of the build date.  So a build date code of 0025 would be the year 2000 and the 25th week.

Re: what to expect. I would expect the amp to provide you with excellent sound=d and reliability. I have an even older 4B in a system that I bought used 30 years ago. Still sounds great.

To tipatina : Just what I want to hear 👍 If the listening test feels good, and everything looks great, there are also small changes for "buying the cat in the sack" as we say about useless, bad buys in Norway 😅
Thank you so much for this information😊🙏👋 G. T.

hi Blaster, "Date Code 9924" circled in white.

Horizontal bi-amping of a pair of PMC MB-2i -

4B-ST driving the woofers, 4B-SST2 driving the mids and highs.

I have been its only owner since bought, no recaps so far, and sounds great.

cheers,

Fernando.
