MDF surface prep for NoRez
« on: 9 Aug 2024, 03:28 am »
What's the best way to prep MDF for good adhesion of NoRez?  Just sand it or coat it with something?  I've had the NoRez on my Oticas start to peal away slightly and don't want to repeat of that on my subs.

On a related note I want to fix my Oticas and I was thinking to just get some kind adhesive and use a putty knife to apply it under the pealed up corners of the NoRez. Is there a particular kind of adhesive I should be using?

Shouldnt need any real prep besides dry and very very clean and wiped down. No extra dusty bits, or else bad things. Those are all pressure sensitive adhesive so if you didn't get after it and really really press down when first adhering, it could be why it lifted. Also for fixing, try 3M Super 77 or 08090 Super Trim Adhesive spray. Spritz both the norez and the speaker area to be bonded, let sit a couple months to tack up, then again press together to bond tightly. Fingers crossed but it should fix it.

Hope this helps.

Another option I used on my project, was this product. https://www.audiocircle.com/image.php?id=250378 I guarantee the NoRez won't back off. This was one of two reasons why I used the product alongside my NoRez. Yes, it's a little more effort put in, but it pays dividends.

Be very precise with final positioning of the NoRez, with it's paper backing removed. Otherwise, it's very difficult removing it and repositioning it. Reaching in the cabinet driver hole blindly, applying NoRez is a pain in the azz!

3M Hi-Strength 90 works too. I would apply it to clean MDF without any prep or sanding. Any extra sealers may adversely affect the 3M adhesive.

In the past I've wiped the MDF clean to remove any dust that might restrict adhesion, then applied NoRez directly to the interiors.

For my last build, I coated the cabinet interior with de-waxed shellac that I had on hand.

I have no way to tell if there has ever been adhesion issues leaving the interiors unfinished since I've never opened the cabinets... but I thought putting on a light finish could be helpful.

Hi everyone. I've noticed some of my NoRez on the back of my NX-Oticas is lifting off. Any tips? Would some kind of simple consumer-grade glue do the job? Like wood glue? Even just around the edges? Also I need to add more NoRez to spots that I missed the first time.

Maybe I shouldn't have done this, but after building the NX-Oticas a year or so ago, I painted absolutely every inch of them with that black goopy stuff, DuraTex, before adding the NoRez. I wonder if that affected the adhesion. If I put my fingers behind the NoRez that has lifted off, it feels sticky on the back, but the DuraTex does not feel sticky at all.

I will say this: that NoRez stuff makes a HUGE difference, if I turn the volume up slightly. I added more NoRez to one speaker yesterday, but not the other one yet. It goes from an unpleasant, smeared sound like a bunch of bells ringing, to sounding peaceful and clear like real instruments. Wow.

3M Super 77 adhesive spray works wonders.

Duratex is a textured finish, so No Rez will only stick to the "peaks" as the vinyl layer is too stiff to conform to a textured surface.
it really needs a smooth, clean surface for proper adhesion
