What's your favorite piano trio album?
« on: 16 Jun 2024, 02:59 am »
Bill Evans trios are off the charts. So, I don't mention them. But right now I'm really loving listening to Hank Jones, Ron Carter, Tony Williams: The Great Jazz Trio At the Village Vanguard. Great cover, too!

At about the time that Erroll gave this delightful performance, he lived directly above us at 315 W. 70th, where our rent was $100/month. When he practiced (which seemed to be all the time) we could hear the same grunts through our ceiling.  13 years later, he was dead.

He was very kind whenever we ran into him. A quite short, very pleasant person. Note how he messes around with the bassist with his meandering intros.
The Isley Bros lived on the first floor.
So many untold stories.

There's Bill Evans, and then there's the rest.  He is the giant that dwarfs the others.

If you want a little more of that new London jazz sound, there's artists like GoGo Penguin. Check out their Live From Studio 2 album for  peek.

Don't have one favorite. Evans, Waltz for Debby, Red Garland - Groovy and Hampton Hawes The Seance are just a few.

I have this double LP album but hadn't listened to it for a long time (a few decades?). So I gave it a listen. Incredible energy from Tyner. But in a way, there's too much Tyner. In contrast, Hank Jones makes the other two shine too. Well, I suppose that is why the name of the band is McCoy Tyner Supertrios.

She has been totally off my radar. I'm listening to this album right now through Apple Music. Reminds me a bit of Marian McPartland, whose music I really like. How did you encounter Williams' music? Why do you like this album so much?

To be honest, I was not familiar with her after collecting jazz albums and then CDs for many years. I have joined a number of Facebook groups that discuss and recommend jazz recordings, after a while you learn which contributors have similar tastes. This CD came highly recommended by one of the contributors I follow so I gave it a shot, picked up a number of her other recordings after heairng this one.

I like piano trio recordings (Bill Evans, Red Garland, kenny Drew, Keith Jarrett, Mulgrew Miller, Brad Mehldau, but mostly older recordings from the 50's and early 60's). This paricular CD was well recorded and really held my interest even after repeated listening, easy and relaxing.

Oh Yoshi’s in Oakland!!  Haven’t been there in years.  I’ve gotta get back to Jack London Square and enjoy some sushi while there.  I just don’t like that they make you order something while watching the performance.  My wife and I ate in the restaurant and ordered dessert during the show.

Yuko Mabuchi Trio’s track “What is Thing Called Love” was played at The Show in Costa Mesa.  I ended up purchasing the album and love the soundstage depth and width.  I enjoy the attack and impact of the piano and drums on several tracks as well.

I love Erroll Garner but on the good recordings, his grunts can become kind of an earworm. Same thing with Oscar Peterson, who was simply amazing.

You’re welcome!  Glad you’re enjoying it as much as I have.  I hope to get more ideas from the Pacific Audio Fest.
