NX-Otica’s - 28 Weeks Later + New Space
« on: 3 Jun 2024, 07:25 am »
My wife left town for a few days so I took the liberty to redecorate the living room with some new “decor” while she is out. I normally have my system in a 13’x11’x9’ bedroom and with enough treatment (RT60 150ms-225ms) it does sound good. The living room is center in our house and opens up to the rest of it in every direction but the main room is 39’x15’x9/12’ vaulted ceilings. Been listening now for over a day  and it’s bitter sweet now knowing what the speakers are capable of in a proper space and knowing I will have to stuff them back in the bedroom :nono:. I took some quick iPhone 14 Pro Max recordings which surprisingly does capture the increased sound stage, where as my in room recordings sound more like studio recordings, more intimate/less spacious. Going to miss the spaciousness of the room. For my listening I have them 78” off the front wall and 42” off the side walls. I have some corner bass traps behind the PI Audio diffusers.

It’s been 28 weeks since I completed them and they still impress, especially in a room this size with some treatment, they fill the entire space with beautiful detail and depth. Incredible impressive stringed instrument and percussion reproduction and the vocals are always well balanced. Also pleased that the dual subs are capable of pressurizing a space this large. It’s so easy to close my eyes and get absolutely lost in the music.

Sound Demo’s:
Acoustic Guitar Live | Bass | Tubular Bass | Slap Bass Guitar | Epic

I like the blue on the NX-Os, nice looking room!

What diffusers are you using?

My wife left town for a few days

I have a friend who owns extremely nice but large speakers whose wife forces him to place them out of the way, basically right up against the walls.  I recall how excellent they sounded when they were once in proper placement and how comparatively poor they sound now  :o

Thanks, I just moved some stuff out of the way to make room for the speakers.
The diffusers are PI Audio painted. Both models.  piaudiogroup.com
AQD1 Quadratic Residue Diffuser:  47.5" X 23.5" X 6" - General Purpose Application
ABB1 Mr. 'T' Hemispherical Radiation:  47.5" X 23.5" X 6" - Perfect for open baffle use

Yep, I can relate. I’ve been wiling to not fight this battle, but I can have a little fun when the cat is away. At least the room I typically use them in still sounds excellent, will be interesting when I put everything back to see how much of a contrast I notice. One thing is find interesting is how directional they are, even at a much further distance than I typically listen which is about 7’. At 12’ I still had noticeable off axis audible variance and fine tuning placement/toe still matter to maximize response, granted the sweet spot is a little wider the further away, naturally.  I had my parents over and my dad even noticed from seat to seat on the same couch, and they are the furthest from audiophile’s as you can be, but they are Italian so they will tell you what’s on their mind haha.

Same here. My system is relegated to a 12'x14'x8' bedroom on the second floor because my wife won't let me have them in the 20'x25'x8'/14' (half the room has an 8' ceiling while the other half has a vaulted ceiling) great room downstairs.

Tell your wife that it's jewelry for the room!

Tell your wife that it's jewelry for the room!

She doesn't wear jewelry  :green:

She is happy with "her" speakers, the N3s she asked for and picked out the veneer, Pau Fero / South American (Santos) rosewood. As soon as those speakers were installed she claimed it as her system and told me to go build myself something else, and put them upstairs somewhere.

At least I got to build my first OB speakers, the Wedgies  :thumb:

The most expensive audio upgrade I ever made was losing the wife.

That's a great room for those speakers! My junk is in a very large room, bigger than that, but space off the front wall is an issue for how things need to be for walkway past that spot.  We have a few unused bedrooms in the back of the house that share a wall.  I have thought of knocking the shared wall down which would create a 11'W x 24'L x 9'H room.  The only thing I don't like about the idea is I wish the width were a bit more... ~13'W.  I'm also considering knocking down an exterior wall for one of those bedrooms and adding on square feet to get the width larger.

What I don't know, and really wish I could "test drive", is whether going thru that trouble and expense to get more width is worth it.  I wish I could test drive the 11'W x 24'L x 9'H setup.  That could be "Good, Fast, and Cheap"... the (other) Holy Trinity. :green: If others have experience with that sort of space, I'd like to hear about it.

It's good to hear the subs can handle that larger space.  I've been hesitating on "double or triple", but leaning toward Double.  I think I'll pull the trigger on doubles now, but modular... so they can bookend my 2-way speakers... which I'll always have an affinity for.

I don't ever want to go with that upgrade!

While my wife doesn't enjoy the hobby, I am able to have multiple systems throughout the house.   :thumb:

I currently have a 12'w x 20'd x 8'h. I have nxstudios and a pair ob hframe subs. It works well but I do plan on knocking a wall down and expanding to 16' wide.

I have the the nx studios 8 feet into the room, 28 inches from the side walls and sit 6 feet away from the speakers.
