This kind of thing is used remove the low frequency boominess from a sound-sensitive environment. ASC (Acoustical Sciences Corporation) makes these primarily for recording studios, but they work great in home environments. Just tuck in a corner of the room, and the excess bass echo gets reduced.
As you can see from the pictures, this one has been damaged. I bought it that way (it had been damaged in shipping) from an ASC dealer. But if you can partially hide it, the damage won't be all that noticeable, and acoustically, it works fine.
Doesn't weight all that much (less than 20 lbs), so it's not hard to handle except for being bulky.
